I thought these bookmarks would be a cute, easy activity for 2nd and 5th graders at school, where I am class parent. I am glad there were 120 bookmarks because only about half were usable. The rest had typos, misspellings, and images of pipes and beer! I am glad I noticed in time to find the ones that were okay to distribute at school. As PTA president, it would not be good if I handed out bookmarks with beer steins on them! They are also very poor quality. They were cheap and I guess I got what I paid for. At least half of these bookmarks are NOT for kids.

If you are into "sailing around the Horn" this book is for you. It is very well written, with humor. The author intersperses his experiences sailing around Cape Horn with historical incidents, geography, and descriptions of weather phenomena and how it affects sailing in those waters. He describes some gruesome historical events of ships in unimaginable storms, and their survival. The courage of the seamen, the captains and their ships cannot be overstated. And outstanding book about seamanship and a mean hunk of rock.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this book, but was pleasantly surprised to find it quite a good read. I am very glad that the author didn't dwell too much on his personal voyage as it was somewhat uneventful. While interesting and informative, I did not buy the book with the expectation it would be a travelogue; and it's not.Instead, the book is rich with insightful and entertaining descriptions of the early explorer's encounters with the climate, topography and indigenous people of that time. Covering everything from the earliest Spanish explorers to the present day territorial conflicts, he also includes wrongheaded missionaries and intriguing eyewitness accounts from clipper ship and windjammer voyages.The history of the Yaghan natives such as the "adopted" Jemmy Button and "Fuegia Basket" was wonderfully detailed for the small amount of time spent on them. The author is a keen observer of things many of us would overlook or fail to appreciate properly. This book is definitely a page turner, as the author expertly seques from his present situations to wonderfully told sea stories.Anyone who enjoys arcane history and anything to do with sailing or ocean adventures should enjoy this tremendously. Highly recommended.

I think this book is brilliant ! It affords the ordinary reader reader an insight into The history and geography of the Cape Horn area . This is a first-hand account of modern-day sailing , interwoven with the journey of the the 'Beagle' ,which took a similar route , many years before with Darwin aboard . One does not have to be a sailor to appreciate the excitement of sea-bound adventures , and this account is one if the best . The book is illustrated only with clearly-drawn maps , but perhaps a detailed sketch of the ships would have increased understanding for readers [like me] who have no knowledge of seaman's language , or a glossary of terms used to describe parts of a sailing ship and her rigging. I gave this book to someone after having read it months ago , but then wanted to read it again , so I oredered it 'used' from Amazon . Considering all the effort which the author must have put into research , it is a bargain at 1 cent plus $3.99 postage ['Lysol' sprayed on arrival] .

I ended up being surprised how enjoyable of a read this has been. I am planning a trip around the horn on a cruise ship and this has definitely added to the enjoyment of the planning. Enjoy his take on history combined with bits of his own journey around the horn. He has me looking forward to my next read of the Uttermost part of the earth to learn even more about this fascinating region of our earth.

I read this while on a cruise around the horn. After reading about the ferocious winds and weather conditions, I realized just how lucky we were! The winds died down the day before we got there. The forecast called for rain, but it ended up being sunny with a great view.Other than the weather, the book was a great read. It added in a lot of history of the region and of the natives including the aboriginals - now mostly extinct, unfortunately - who lived there, completely naked in frigid, windy conditions.

Within the first few pages, two things were clear. (1) The book was going to be a very interesting read. (2) The book is full of mistakes, the sort of mistakes that fact-checkers and editors are hired to deal with, so that book reviewers don't have to injure themselves with interminable face-palming. And that doesn't begin to address the inability of the author to spell place-names correctly or consistently. But this is minor, even when aggravating. And it's fun to read, with the first-person sailing experiences lending an intriguing touch. The errors of fact (and a bit of occasional sleepiness in the editor's work) don't really detract from the interest and readability, unless there is a need to cite factual accuracy, so don't cite Murphy in your thesis. Some of the author's errors are actually the result of reliance on, well, unreliable sources, and the errors of others. Take for example the author's insistence that when Sir Francis Drake was raiding the Spanish colonies, that he was referred to in Spanish as "El Draco." Actually that seems to only appear in erroneous writings in English on the topic, a suggestion that some English-language writer goofed. (The"draco" reference was the "Latinised" and not Spanish version spoken by those most concerned and affected). The Spanish-language and 19th-century English-language texts reveal that Drake was certainly feared, but his name was written as "El Draque." ("... So great an object of terror at Madrid was El Draque that he was looked on as an incarnation of the old serpent...." --The English in the West Indies: Or, The Bow of Ulysses, by J A Froude, noted 19th-century British historian). And then the confusion between "the end of the continent" when the author really meant "the end of the archipelago" - distinctions one would expect to be accurately made by a self-described sailor. There is trouble in other areas of research as well, such as describing the northern ranging of the Alacalufe Indians (he is off by more than 200 km on this one). But again, these are details which won't interfere with the average reader's enjoyment.

Given that three years have now elapsed since George Jones’ passing, I had thought, given the storied credentials of the author, Rich Kienzle, who has written many booklets for country CD reissues including those for the definitive Bear Family/Musicor boxed sets on Mr.Jones’, that this book, described as a “definitive biography” would be up there with Colin Escott’s bio (written with co-authors Merritt and MacEwen) of Hank Williams and Peter Guralnick’s 2 volume bio of Elvis.When the book arrived I became a little concerned that the font size was on the large side further reducing the content of the already modest 258 pages of text and then discovered it lacked an index. This book is thus rather superficial and also condescending with Kienzle’s narrative lacking empathy for its subject. While Mr. Jones’ life had its ups and downs, what shines through a great many of his recordings is his native talent that has led many, including Frank Sinatra, to contribute to the opinion that George Jones was the greatest country singer of the 20th century. Even today, long after his prime in the charts, his emotional delivery still cuts through the 24/7 classic country airplay on Sirius/XM’s "Willie’s Roadhouse".While easy to read, Mr. Kienzle's writing focuses more on the demons that plagued Mr. Jones’ personal life - at times reflecting more than a little schadenfreude rather than presenting a balanced and objective study of a gifted performer. The early recordings on Starday, Mercury, UA and Musicor receive little in the way of objective analysis other than reflecting on Pappy Daily’s limitations as a producer. Midway in the book (p.125 actually) Mr. Kienzle abruptly changes stylistic gears and after a rather strange in depth analysis of the perceived comparisons between the 1962 movie "Requiem for a Heavyweight" and Mr. Jones’ life to that point slows down a little to discuss some of the many Billy Sherrill-produced hits Jones recorded for Epic. The commentary on these often seems begrudging if not sour and leaves the reader with the sense that Mr. Kienzle also didn’t think a whole lot of Mr. Sherrill.The book is far from a definitive biography of George Jones, nor does it provide any especially valuable insights to the Nashville music scene of the late 20th century. For that, the reader should read Jimmy McDonough’s excellent "Tammy Wynette: Tragic Country Queen" (Penguin Books, 2011) and Jack Isenhour’s incomparable "He Stopped Loving Her Today: George Jones, Billy Sherrill, and the Pretty-Much Totally True Story of the Making of the Greatest Country Record of All Time" (University Press of Mississippi, 2011) both of which capture, the time, the place and the genius of George Jones.A minor error (p. 73) - Bobby Vee never toured with Buddy Holly - in fact they never crossed paths - Bobby substituted for Buddy after the fateful Clear Lake plane crash.

This book is a less personal, less detailed, and believe it or not a lesser quality written book than George's Autobiography, "I Lived toTell it All." It rushes through his career with few quotes, few stories, and basic knowledge of Georges life and career. All this writer has accomplished is an obvious attempt at cashing in on George Jones's death without adding any new or detailed accounts of his life and artistry or even adding any personal judgment of George's talent. He glosses over many years and the turmoil of Georges personal life. This is a rushed, uninteresting account of a very interesting man.

I hated for this book to end. What an interesting man. I have read just about all I can find on George Jones and this is one of the best. I had the pleasure of seeing him four times and he was (no matter how drunk, stoned or sober) the best singer I ever heard and yes that includes Sinatra who said Jones was the second best singer. Sorry Frank, George was the best.

George Jones was a glorious mess and the book explains how and why with plenty of details.The writing isn't particularly sparkling, but it gets the job done for those who are fascinated aboutthe great voice and the not so great man.

Recommend this book to anyone that loved George and is interested in hearing what he lived through. A fine tribute to one of best country singer that has ever lived

In my vocabulary there is no such phrase as "I can't," I thank Ms. Gwen for that. She taught me that there will always be obstacles in our way, but there is always a way. Try as we might we will pass these obstacles. I was eagerly awaiting this book. I was interviewed over a year ago and could not wait. I knew Marisa's point was to show that there is life outside of Drs offices and pharmacies. And there is even life outside of our beds. But the inspiration that I gained from reading the other stories from people who went through very similiar things amazed me. I rememeber Marisa saying there should be something to help new Lupus patients, NOW there is. I can only think how my dark moments maybe wouldn't have been so dark knowing what I know now. And realizing that others feel the same as I do. It was wonderful for my family and spouse to read of others struggles in the support department and know the bright light is always somewhere even if the clouds hang around a while. I know for myself it was wonderful look at who I was as a person and who I had always dreamed I would be. Reading about others helped me realize that Lupus really doesn't hinder my ambitions all that much, just takes us all on an interesting detour. I would recommend this book for anyone who has a diagnosis of Lupus, any terminal disease, or chronic disease for that matter, becuase health changes us and this book shows true warriors and their fight to be who they want to be.

This is more information than I've received from my daughter's doctors......unbelievable. I'm glad I found this book, and praise the Lord Jesus Christ for our lives.

After reading a brief excerpt of this book I was immediately inspired by the amazing individuals who voluntarily poured their hearts out to tell their story about lupus. This book is both enlightening and encouraging to newly diagnosed lupus patients and to anyone who needs some "chicken soup" for their soul. It's the most positive uplifting book to give hope and live life and love life in spite of lupus.

I had the privilege to contribute some thoughts to this book, but like Lupus and these stories, no two cases are alike. The stories depicted in this book by the people who live with or near this illness is one that relates to everyone. It has served as a great tool to educate others who are not familiar with the disease in a way that does not undermine the seriousness of the illness without first sending you away motivated and optimistic about taking on any challenges that may come. You will easily re-read the book over time to reflect, cope, build strength or take charge. Very inspired by and grateful to all who contributed.

This book is for anyone with or without lupus who wants to be inspired by truly remarkable people. It teaches you important life lessons and that everyone has a story. Through tears and laughter you will not want to put it down!

Perfect book if you're curious and want a closer look into the lives of people coping with Lupus. The best way to learn about a medical condition is from those who deal with it on a daily basis.
