I have been reading many books about Muslims in many different times and places. This memoir stands apart from them in that it is a first person account of life in the Sultan's homes by a woman who was born there and lived there until her late teens. The most enjoyable parts of the book, for me, were when she described the matrimonial ceremony, and described the day to day protocol for eating, praying, and visiting friends.More than once, I was forced to pause and seriously consider some of the Arab customs pertaining to feeding the destitute, and the system of taxation levied upon the wealthy, whereby they had to tithe 10% of all their gains to the community. And this was done without laws imposed from the state, but rather as an unquestioned responsibility to the religion. Finally, I learned a lot from the author's ability to jump from Zanzibar to Germany in Victorian times. She has a unique view on both Eastern and European culture. She often come out with some zingers as she compare the two cultures which make one stop and really think about the superiority of one over the other. For anyone who is interested in Arab culture from 150 years ago, I beg you to read this book. It is undoubtedly more authentic than any scholarly treatise of the time. It is a delight. Do not discount it. Do not let it pass you by.

Because I have recently become involved in a dance troupe involving Middle Eastern, Romani, Persian, etc. costumes, the cover of this memoir immediately caught my eye. The autobiography was much more readable than I expected from something written 150 years ago. Just as in any classic book from long ago, it takes awhile to get used to the rhythm of historical dialogue. Add to that the fact that the author was virtually uneducated, and that the book is written through her eyes in a time that was very different than now, it could have been very hard to read. However, the true story of a woman raised in a harem (with all the political intrigue you might imagine), was instead hard to put down! Her down to earth details of royal Muslim life, like wearing hajib, explanation of Sharia law, experiencing Ramadan, and even her very unpleasant view of black Africans made me wish for more of her outspoken voice. I do admit, the tale begins to drag when she falls in love, moves to Germany, and converts to Christianity, but, she was writing about her life in Zanzibar and so her story had to end. I truly enjoyed reading this unusual memoir of a real Arabian princess and would recommend to fans of women's history in particular.

I bought this thinking it'd give a bit more insight as to the life of females in Islamic Zanzibar but it fails. The author seems completely ignorant as to what is going on around her, and to her. At one point in the early part of the book she claims that contrary to popular belief, males and females are treated completely equally, with girls just as likely to inherit as boys in a family. And then she goes on just a little later about how her brothers are all given a house and servants when they come of age, yet the sisters aren't given that same advantage (probably because the girls will be married off and become the responsibility of a husband). She says one thing and then almost immediately contradicts it with the reality--and she doesn't even realize she's just made herself a liar. She leads a fairly easy life of privilege and doesn't seem to have much interest in anything other than herself and her pleasures so she misses so much in life. It got pretty boring pretty fast and I began to question why she bothered to write a memoir, consider there's nothing really to remember. She really hasn't lead anything close to an interesting life and hasn't done much with the time on earth she has been given.

That this book was originally published in 1907, and I expected it to be ponderous to read. But it was very easy to read, highly intelligent, well organized, and a fascinating look at the culture of Zanzibar in the late 1800s. The author was the daughter of the Oman / Zanzibar sultan, who left to marry a German merchant. She makes very good points about the strengths and challenges weaknesses of both the Arab culture and the European culture. Well worth an investment of time to read.

I found this book to be very interesting in that the Princess tells her story herself and brings the reader into a life not known by many people. She in describes every day life in Zanzibar during the late 1800's and early 1900's and even royalty in those days had it's drama with family members.I found her writing to be a little dry and juvenile at times, but it was nicely written.

this was good for the traveller to zanzibar to get a touch of insight. i have to say, her opinions on the nature of "negro slaves" was quite off-putting, but i had to just remind myself that she was of a different culture and a different time. also, zanzibar was big into the slave trade at the time. ugly history, no doubt. other than that, it was a really interesting insight to what life was like in a place that, if you visit today, you can't even compare to your home. but take it back 100+ years... very interesting...

Whether or not Reute is truly an Arabian princess shouldn't be disputed, as the detailed account of customs, courts, inside secrets, and life as royalty is too accurate to possibly be a lie. The blatant, unapologetic way the authoress describes, and confronts is compelling enough so that one does not want to put the book down until it is finished.

I found this memoir fascinating and lively. The author is bright, lively and a keen observer. That said, it was written during the Victorian era, in German, and then translated. So the writing and viewpoint reflect that era. Just imagine an Arabian princess from an idyllic tropical island who moved to stuffy, cold, Victorian Germany. Her views on the cultural differences are insightful, refreshing and funny. Just be prepared to understand her Victorian cultural viewpoint and writing style.

I love that you can pick up these quick, to the point booklets and read them to pick up great info that helps address things like how to stop losing your hair. My husband has this issue and we had never heard of a lot of these remedies, such as massaging your scalp with coconut oil? Really? Who would've thought!Lots of recommendations for treatments, herbal treatments seem to be on the rise and the booklet explains each one. And other things like egg yolk, coconut milk and baking soda are new to us as well. This is a very helpful guide, I recommend it.

This is pretty complete but I would add borage oil, evening primrose oil, fish/flax oil combo oil, and seaweed to the nutrients list. These all combined restored my hair over time.

Review

Praise for A People's History of the United States: "Zinn has written a brilliant and moving history of the American people from the point of view of those who have been exploited...the book is an excellent antidote to establishment history....While the book is precise enough to please specialists, it should satisfy any adult reader."--Library Journal"In many years of searching, we have not found one history book we would recommend to them--until [the] just published "A Young People's History of the United States." This is the edition of A People's History that we have all been waiting for."--Deborah Menkart, executive director, Teaching for Change"Zinn's work exemplifies an approach to history that is radical, regardless of its subject or geographical location. He tells us the untold story, the story of the world's poor, the world's workers, the world's homeless, the world's oppressed, the people who don't really qualify as real people in official histories. About the Author

The visionary historical work of professor and activist HOWARD ZINN (1922–2010) is widely considered one of the most important and influential of our era. After his experience as a bombardier in World War II, Zinn became convinced that there could no longer be such a thing as a “just war,” because the vast majority of victims in modern warfare are, increasingly, innocent civilians. In his books, including A People’s History of the United States, its companion volumeVoices of a People’s History of the United States, and countless other titles, Zinn affirms the power of the people to influence the course of events.REBECCA STEFOFF is the author of more than 100 nonfiction books for children and young adults, and she has adapted several best-selling history books for younger readers.

#12,399 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

As this book explains at the beginning, most history books, especially textbooks, look at history from the point of view of power – kings and presidents, scientists and writers and other noteworthy names. Therefore, much of this history is about the struggle over power – wars, coups, electioneering and other means of transferring power, whether peacefully or violently. Most of these books make claims to “objectivity” without acknowledging that in fact, they are all, of necessity, biased. Writing history is a matter of what gets written and what gets left out. Who gets to tell the story and who is silenced.Howard Zinn’s THE PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, on the other hand, has no pretensions about “objectivity. Zinn states up front that he is writing the history we don’t learn in school or read in the newspapers. He is telling the history of the people who have been affected by power and the struggle for power. In the Friedman/Thatcher/Reagan vision of “trickle-down economics”, Zinn is concerned about those getting trickled on and, more importantly, what those people have done and are doing about it. The original, adult version of this book is over seven hundred pages long. Zinn, along with co-writer Rebecca Stefoff, wanted to bring a more accessible version of the book to younger audiences, hence, THE YOUNG PEOPLE’S HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, which is roughly two-thirds as long with significantly less writing per page. The young people’s version pretty much follows the adult version of the book, starting with debunking the myth of Columbus and continuing until about the date of publication, including information on the September 11 attacks, the war on terrorism and the invasion of Iraq. The book ends with the Democratic resurgence at the midterm elections during Bush 43’s second term. Although Zinn makes it repeatedly clear that he doesn’t have significantly more love for the Democrats than the Republicans, he did seem to view this as a positive sign that Americans had had enough of abuses of executive power, foreign wars and empire building and federal overreach at home. Sadly, he lived just long enough to probably realize his hopes may have been overly optimistic.Of necessity, the young people’s version is significantly less detailed and more simplistic than the adult version, which can be a bit of a drawback as it exacerbates accusations of bias and inaccuracy. As noted, Zinn never pretends to be un-biased, but the simplification in this book does away with a degree of nuance that seems to lead to a number of statements that have been simplified to the point of generalization, and generalizations almost always carry a degree of inaccuracy. As simplified as this book is, I don’t recommend it for high school students (most of whom can handle the adult version). This book would be good for late elementary and middle school kids with adult guidance. I would like to see this book used in conjunction with a supposedly “objective” text book and maybe even an explicitly right-wing focused book. It would be a slow process, but a worthwhile exercise to have students comb through equivalent chapters and look for information among the texts that is outright contradictory versus information that is simply a matter of perspective. For instance, the view of Columbus as a “great” explorer who “discovered” America isn’t necessarily incompatible with the view of him as a conqueror and slave master of the Indians – it’s just a matter of whether you look at it from a European or an Indian point of view. Students should pay attention in each text to see whose voices are included and whose are not.But other sections, such as the Civil War, may present contradictory information among the texts. For instance, was the Civil War fought over slavery or not? Who was the aggressor? In these cases, students should be helped to find primary sources which may support one position or another. In this way, students will begin to understand how we know what we know about history and to understand the limits of objective “truth” in history, which really makes up a large chunk of what studying history is really all about, rather than simply memorizing names and dates. One of the biggest drawbacks to both this version and the adult version of this book is the lack of footnotes, endnotes, bibliography or other references. Some sources are mentioned in the text itself and there are many quotes from ordinary people’s letters to the editor or elected officials or interviews with the media. But without adequate information to trace those sources for one’s self, the book suffers a small loss of credibility, even for those who support Zinn’s message and perspective. Students especially need to understand where historical information comes from and that, while it may represent an interpretation, the information underlying that interpretation comes from actual historical events as documented in many different sources.Everyone, from the most flaming radicals to the staunchest conservatives, should read Zinn’s work simply for the neglected viewpoints he offers. If his information is wrong, then it should be easy enough to dispute it, debate it and determine the truth of the matter. But no one, child or adult, is going to be “indoctrinated” simply by hearing an alternate viewpoint or different interpretation. And, while Zinn’s viewpoint is definitely quite harsh on the power structure that has frequently led America in a bad direction, the book is not itself anti-American. In fact, the book is quite optimistic in the idea that ordinary people, standing up for what they believe in, have the power to change history and thereby correct the mistakes of our imperialistic, racist, classist past to create a more equitable and just future as enshrined in our founding documents.

Using this as the foundation of my homeschool curriculum for my daughter who is in 3rd-4th grade history. We supplement with other Zinn resources like the Zinn Ed Project website and the DVD The PEOPLE SPEAK and the audio stories. Love all of these resources.

This is a great introduction to the work of Howard Zinn for youth. I do think that in some ways it is almost too truncated, but that is because we are using it as a resource in our homeschooling history studies. I am supplementing with other resources, and we like it as a jumping off point for more investigation, research, and discussion.

Great read! It has changed my perception of the US government, military and our society. The book discusses important insight of American history that wasn't taught in high school.

Having read the grown-up version of this book, I read this on a flight using my Kindle. It is very readable, and true to the original, though geared to a younger audience. Zinn should be required reading in all history and social science programs.

I got this book for my daughter as required reading assignment. I don’t know what’s going on with this brainwashing of kids by liberal teachers but I told my daughter to just get an F and I explained the opinion views in this book isn’t history. What a waste of money.

Excellent read for your high school or college age child! All adults will appreciate the book.

A great view of the history of the United States - an alternative to the usual view.

Very poorly plotted story. I gave up at about the forty percent point. We have a standard set up. Witch in hiding from family working as a coroner in New York. She has visions of the dead. A series of women meeting her description end of in her work and she investigates. We also have the usual magical police going around. Unfortunately, she is an idiot. There are numerous ways she could pass on the information her visions give her, but instead she tries incompetently to investigate herself. It is painful to read. Nothing comes together and most characters just come and go with no rhyme or reason. Somewhere in her is a story worth reading. However, it needs a serious rethink to make find it.

This is an interesting read and twist on witches. Casey is an interesting witch as she did not complete her formal witch training. The story although shirt and concise gives the reader a good understanding of the main character and both worlds in "witch" she interacts. Readable in one setting and the next one hints to be just as entertaining.

Fun story to read. Mr. Stokes is a great story teller with a since of adventure. I thought I figured out who the bad guy was, then, I was wrong. Maybe it is this other character, it has to be. Nope, wrong again.

Excellent book keep reading and reading - really keep my attention with all the crimes and magic together happening. I liked it so much I have already purchased book 2 in the series.

Dying to Meet You was hard to put down! Stokes has created some interesting characters with a wry sense of humor, and has the ability to have a cliff-hanger at the end of each chapter. Looking forward to the sequel. If I had the power of prescience, perhaps I would see a future novel set in Sendai, Japan! (Review by Gary Rasmussen)

I do not usually read the paranormal type books but thought I would give it a try. Was not disappointed, the storyline drew me in and kept me reading. Found myself at 3 in the morning with eyes drooping trying to stay awake to finish it. Fast paced and interesting. I would recommend you give it a try have now downloaded the next in series.

I got one of my regular emails about recommended books and it caught my eye seemed different from my norm so as they say it got the cat......I couldn't put it down and can't wait for the next book this is an awesome read!!!!

I loved the storyline, the brought to life characters and Kasey’s (or should I say Beth’s?) environment. I love coroner stories with a mystery to solve. I don’t like that I have to wait for the next one! This is a must read.
