I bought this for an eight year old who LOVES bugs and reptiles. She reads a couple of entries a night from this one and the Bugopedia. There is a LOT of information in these books and it's broke down in easy to read sentences and easy words to understand. Smaller children will enjoy the bright and colorful pictures. Older children will enjoy the information without having to ask too many times "What does this mean?". And even an adult with a curious child will enjoy these books as you get to explore the creepy crawlies of the world.I had a picture encyclopedia when I was a child and it was my most treasured book. And for right now, this Reptileopedia (and the Bugopedia) are her most treasured books and as long as she's satisfied with them, I am too. Next we're going to get the Oceanopedia.

The Pickel family owns a print shop and has customers/friends with the likes of Charles Dickens. The daughter of the house, Meg, is adventurous and daring. She is strong willed and tries to find her missing older brother. While traveling at night through London she unexpectedly meets Charles Dickens. They make a pact that they will save Meg's brother.I felt different enjoyment from this book then Buzbee's Steinbeck Ghost. Instead of flowing into each book Steinbeck wrote this one was a whole new mystery featuring Dickens and mentions of his stories. Meg and Dickens are interesting partners. Dickens comes across very fun loving which if you have seen real photos of Dickens you would not think that of him because I have not seen one where he smiles.This book tells about the dark side of the times for children who worked in labor houses like Dickens did once as a child. So book has a little grittiness to it that makes some it hard to enjoy even though it may be based on facts. Dickens does make it laughable at times by dress in odd suits and meeting odd souls. Good read for Dickens lovers.

This is a great series for young adults that is written by a local, Bay Area author. A teacher of mine heard about this author while at a Steinbeck conference from another teacher. We bought the series for the campus library. We cannot keep it on the shelves. The students really enjoy it.

I greatly enjoyed being swept away into the London of the Dickens era. While the phony seance near the beginning of The Haunting of Charles Dickens may have hinted at ghosts and paranormal, it soon becomes apparent it is trickery and unscrupulous business practies that Meg and Mr. Dickens must overcome. Meg, who had gone out in search of her lost brother, Orion, was drawn to the strange green glow emanating from skylights of an empty mansion. There she comes across her old family friend, Charles Dickens, who is also looking in on the seance. Before their secretive viewing of the seance is over, Meg glimpses a young man she believes to be her brother who has been missing for six months. This lifts her heart and resolve to find her brother. In tracking Orion through old London, Meg comes across many signs he left behind. Her sleuthing and work in their family's printing shop leads her to seek more for herself when she's grown, rather than just marriage into a suitable family.The setting of Dickens era London was vivid for me, including travel by foot and carriage complete with the clop of horses's hooves on cobblestones. The jingle of the horses's harnesses, the squeeking of the buggies and carts, and the smell of a soot permeated city all add to the intensity of the scenes. The sights, smells and decay of old London remind the reader of that manufacturing era.The haunting in this story comes about three ways: The first apparent haunting is the loss parents experience for their "lost" children who've been forced into labor in those 'underground' sweatshops. The haunting that effects Charles Dickens reflects his state of mind and emotions rather than being about ghosts. Meg is haunted by the loss of her older brother, Orion, yet she refuses to believe he is dead. The only ghosts turn out to be the children who are conscripted and forced to work under horrid conditions. They are the "living" ghosts who've been whisked away.Through the way author Lewis Buzbee wove some of the Dickens story titles and characters into this plot and setting, he offers teases which may tempt young readers to explore reading more about the Dickens era. I recommend 'top hats doffed' for Buzbee for reopening this world of reading about the Dickens era for readers, young and old.

I'm currently teaching seventh- and eighth-graders at a classical school where the students spend six years reading the great works of literature. Since these two age groups study Greco-Roman and medieval literature, respectively, for homework, they are always looking for something else to read for "fun." At the beginning of the year, the girls were lamenting the fact that when they went to the bookstores, all they could find was "vampire stuff." They then asked, "Isn't there anything good to read?" I've prepared a list for them, but certainly I will be adding *The Haunting of Charles Dickens* to it. In fact, one of the girls has already asked to borrow my copy when I'm done.Set in Victorian England, the story centers on a girl whose older brother has gone missing. The father of the family runs a print shop which is frequented by Charles Dickens who often comes in to buy high quality paper, so young Meg does know the Great Man. Still, she is nonetheless startled to discover Mr. Dickens crawling about on a nearby roof peering downward at a séance that is taking place in the upper room of one of the houses. (Meg is out there trying to figure out where her brother has gone.) The two become partners in detection as they begin a quest, with the permission of Meg's father, to find Orion, the missing brother.Buzbee's prose is fabulous! The story moves apace and one is caught up in the characters and the action. One of the more pleasurable aspects of the book is the fact that many of the places and characters that Meg and Dickens encounter along the way have the names that have made appearances in Dickens' books. For example, the seance is being held in Satis House where they eventually find a decaying cake with cobwebs and mice. Being unfamiliar with Dickens' books would not hinder the enjoymnet of this one, but I feel certain that after reading this book, most young readers would certainly undertake to read them, starting with *Great Expectations*, which figures largely in Meg's own reading in Buzbee's book. (Caveat: Buzbee does slip and let it be known who Pip's benefactor actually was.)At the end of the book, there is a three-page appendix entitled "Children and Charles Dickens," which explains the important role that Dickens played in effecting child labor laws and other laws curbing the exploitation of children in the streets of London, which he knew first-hand from his own time on the streets as a boy. It is a good addendum to the book, but it does contain my only complaint about the book, Buzbee's reference to the "ragged" schools of the age as "pitiful." Education was not compulsory in England until 1870, but that did not stop members of the public from reaching out to the street children and providing them with the rudiments of reading and writing with a view toward helping them find decent employment when and how they could. Were they perfect? Far from it. But led by Anthony Ashley Cooper, 7th Earl of Shaftesbury, they were hardly pitiful. Dickens was invited by those running the street schools to join in the effort, and it is true that he found them wanting in some areas; however, since we know that our own twenty-first century schools have sunk to "creative spelling" and the so-called "reform mathematics," I hardly think we can turn up our noses at folks who were fighting ignorance and want with virtually no resources on the streets of early Victorian London.That aside, however, I do indeed love and highly recommend this novel. More, please, Mr. Buzbee.

This book of chindogu features some of the most humorous and ingenious inventions ever, inventions so impractical yet addressing real world problems, that they are referred to as "unuseless." The inventions remind me of Monty Python animator Terry Gilliam's cartoons gone horribly awry. Editor Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall explains the concept nicely in the foreword: all these inventions are real and have been manufactured, but to qualify as a real chindogu, the device must be completely impracticable in the real world. Readers are even invited to join and submit chindogu of their own to the International Chindogu Academy. (I am thinking of submitting a Marmoset Crauncher.)The word "chindogu" was appropriated for these inventions as it is Japanese for "odd or distorted tool." That is a perfect description of these items. There are too many for me to list, but all are beautifully explained and illustrated. Some of my favorites include: "Duster Slippers For Cats," in which housecats don dustmops on their paws to assist with household chores (the illustration is priceless); "The Noodle Eater's Hair Guard," which is the silly pink contraption on the cover; "The Back Scratcher's T-Shirt" (which is not only funny, it borders on a good idea); the "Portable Subway Strap" (for those who enjoy holding onto a plunger affixed to the roof of a train); and the "Ear Extender," which gets my vote for best decorative headgear made from colanders.This is a funny book, and is beautifully rendered in color throughout. The only warning I have is that if you read this in long sittings, eventually you may find yourself saying "Hey, that's a pretty good idea!" (I had this thought when looking at the "Butterstick.") I recommend this book to lovers of the odd and obscure everywhere.

A wonderful collection of items for anyone who enjoy the ridiculous. The product overviews are part of the joke, so don't expect too much info who/when/where/what/why these funny items are invented.This is a real example of a real reaction from one of my guests after picking up this book:"Oh my god, I want to rip this book into little pieces."

Funny and interesting book about clever and sometimes odd inventions.

Bought this for my brother as a stocking stuffer, he found it hilarious!

There are creative inventions you absolutely need, there are those you didn't know you needed, and then there are chindogus (Japanese art of inventing unusual gadgets). This is one of the funniest books I've seen in a while. The inventions presented here are so incredibly useless they are hilarious. The best chindogu is probably the book itself: a compilation of chindogus.

Liked the humor and the point of view of this book, quite unusual but also funny and believable

A continuation of Riad Sattouf's graphic memoir of childhood. In this installment, which covers Riad at ages 6 - 7, the Sattouf family--Riad, his parents, and his baby brother--are living in a small Syrian village near Homs, where his grandmother lives as well as a number of other relatives (it almost seems as if everyone nearby is a cousin, aunt, or uncle).Riad starts school, and many scenes are set there, where corporal punishment--delivered with something that looks like a truncheon, generally as a THWACK! across the hands--is arbitrary and commonplace, and much of the education seems to be pure indoctrination. For instance, as Riad recounts it, the very first lesson is learning the national anthem ("Defenders of the Homeland, peace be with you...The home of pan-Arabism, a sacred sanctuary...Our spirit is noble and our past glorious, and our martyrs' souls are our guardians...."), and before a presidential election, the class is told, "we must all say yes to our president Hafez Al-Assad [father of the current president, Bashar Al-Assad]...So you must tell your parents to vote yes, of course, because President Assad is the father of the Syrian nation." Riad afterwards reports, capturing his childhood innocence, "On February 10, 1985, Hafez Al-Assad was reelected with a 100-percent yes vote, a world record!" Assad, by the way, was the only candidate.There are other memories of these schooldays--some that seem quite ordinary and pleasant; others that will likely strike readers as much darker (e.g., playing at war against Israel, with cries of "Let's kill as many Jews as we can!...Yaay! All the Jews are dead!"). And there are many scenes set at home, where Riad's love and respect for his father are quite evident, but where he seems not to fully sense the magnitude of the tension between his French-born mother and his father, educated in France and with seemingly ambivalent feelings about traditional and modern values. The mother is generally in the background in this story, but when she emerges--for instance, immediately and forcefully condemning the honor killing of a unwed village woman who became pregnant, while Riad's father vacillates about reporting the crime--it seems apparent that conflicts are going to be a larger part of the story going forward.Another telling scene takes place late in the book when on a summer vacation in France to visit his grandparents, Riad visits the Euromarche, a superstore along the lines, I suppose, of a Target. He is overwhelmed by the selection toys, electronics, groceries, etc, and he concludes, "For me, it was the best place on earth." This is in contrast to the fact that when his father wants to purchase some luxuries for the home (to his mother, necessities, like a gas oven), he has to resort to the black market, where goods are smuggled in from Lebanon. During the same trip to get the oven, he also happily buys a VCR--a Betamax. Ulp.Book 3 in this series was published in France in Oct 2016 but will apparently not be available in the US until Aug 2018. I look forward to it!

This is an outstanding memoir. One must acknowledge that it takes place when the author is between 6 and 7. I will have to hunt down some interviews of the Mr. Sattouf, because most readers (including myself) find that his father and many aspects of Syrian government and life come across as awful. Riad is half French and half Syrian. In volume one, his father (who is educated but incredibly sexist, racist and ethnocentric) hauls the family from France to Libya and then Syria so that he can secure a teaching position. This volume takes place entirely in Syria, save for a 2 week vacation to France that Riad takes with his mother and younger brother. Riad's father constantly puts the west down and says how Syria is very superior...but Riad continually contradicts his father (for example - when he visits a doctor, the doctor tells the son and father that he should have the operation in France rather than Syria....the father refuses to tell the mother this because it goes against his propaganda).Because this is volume 2, Riad is more at the center of action than an observer of his parents. He enters school and has to deal with terrible rule beatings from his teachers and statist propaganda about religion and politics (the bit on the Presidential election is terrific). Riad has a kind heart and a keen eye - he can see that many of his classmates are very poor and some have burn marks on their face and hands (from crawling around as a baby and knocking over super hot cups of tea). He walks around with other children, picks up crabs, plays at war, forms friendships, and is occasionally ostracized and left out. Despite being set in Syria, Riad shares many universal experiences of childhood.The first volume was nominated for an Eisner award. It would have won, but it ran into incredibly stiff competition (March 2 by John Lewis won, while "The Story of My Tits" is an incredible memoir about a family's multigenerational battle with breast cancer). March 3 came out a few weeks before this, and Mr. Satouf will be hard pressed to pick up the Eisner this year. But it seems like we will have several volumes of this comic, so he should get an Eisner at some point.It's a fine work. I imagine that some Arabs will find this offensive, and that some Trumpists will cite it as an excuse to ban all Muslims (but then again, that kind of individual would not read this). Both are wrong. Frankly, it's a great story from a man raised in two worlds.

I wanted to buy volume one when it came out but decided to wait until volume 2 was released - I live in Australia and it takes forever to have it sent over and costs a fortune. So, I received both volumes at the same time and whipped through them in a day. Now I realize that volumes 3, 4, and 5 are in the pipeline. I hate it; I'm not a patient guy.The story: gut retching. Painfully honest. Frankly, I'd fear for the author's safety. I pray that the title is ironic and the it does not depict the Arab of the future but Sattouf makes it quite clear that change in the Arab world just isn't in the cards.

A brilliant, moving and funny story of the author's vivid childhood memories when his insecure but caring father takes the family from France to his poor home village in Syria. Sattouf's drawings and words bring to life his six year old feelings and fears, as well as his very specific memories of the streets, his school, and the children and adults he encounters in Syria and on vacation in France. A classic which I will re-read many times. Everyone should read it.

Beautiful and eye opening.

A tour de force look at life in the Arab world from the perspective of a little boy with a Syrian father and a French mother. Rings true!
