Amazon.com Review

When you look at the popularity of mind-body medicine today, it's hard to understand what a groundbreaking book this was when it was first published in 1975. Based on studies at Boston's Beth Israel Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Dr. Herbert Benson showed that relaxation techniques such as meditation have immense physical benefits, from lowered blood pressure to a reduction in heart disease. The Relaxation Response demystifies the mantra meditation used in the transcendental meditation program, explaining how anyone can reap its advantages with or without the help of a guru. If you want to understand the beginnings of today's alternative medicine movement, or if you're simply looking to learn a simple meditation technique without a lot of metaphysical trappings, this is a good place to start. --Ben Kallen

Describes a simple technique that can transform both the individual and society. Essentially Transcendental meditation for the masses who are intimidated by the Eastern mystic roots or cost. Elegantly explains a natural physiologic response that has been scientifically validated and universally applicable. Only scratches the surface of its benefits which go far beyond blood pressure control and feeling good. A must read for anyone interested in improving their health, happiness, well being, intelligence, intuition, compatibility, skills, and spiritual growth. I am a physician who regularly recommends this book to my patients but it is equally beneficial to the "healthy".

I read the 25th anniversary edition of this seminal work on stress reduction, which was released in 2009. Obviously, that makes this an oldie, but it’s clearly a goodie as well. The new addition has a substantial introduction, providing updated information. The body’s “fight or flight” response to stressful conditions has long been recognized and it’s virtually a household term. However, despite the equally alliterative name and the fact that Dr. Benson’s original book came out well over 30 years ago, the relaxation response remains a lesser known phenomena. Decades ago, Herbert Benson, a Harvard physician, recognized that patients’ coping ability influenced their health outcomes--specifically with respect to hypertension (a.k.a. high blood pressure.) This led him to investigate how a state of reduced stress could be achieved, and whether this could have a positive impact on health outcomes.Benson and his co-investigators found that Transcendental Meditation (TM) could trigger the relaxation response, and from that they further uncovered specific aspects of TM that were generalizable in achieving this state (i.e. an object of concentration and a passive / non-judgmental attitude.) From this it followed that activities such as yoga, chi gong, walking, and some types of exercise could achieve the same physiological state as meditation. There was scholarly pressure to establish that the relaxation response was more than a placebo effect. In proving that the relaxation response didn’t hinge on a patient’s beliefs and that it had a predictable effect (and hence it was inconsistent with the placebo effect) Benson also realized that maybe doctors shouldn’t be so dismissive of the placebo effect—people were getting better, after all, and there was some mechanism by which that wellness was achieved that would be worth understanding. In the first chapter, Benson describes an epidemic of hypertension, the fight or flight response, and its opposite number: the relaxation response. The next chapter delves into the specifics of hypertension and related topics like cholesterol consumption. Chapter 3 makes a connection between stress and the proclivity to develop hypertension. The following chapter lays out various approaches to achieving a more relaxed physiological state, including: biofeedback, yoga, zen, progressive relaxation, and hypnosis. Chapter 5 is about altered states of consciousness, and, specifically, the meditative state. Various age-old methods of achieving a meditative mind are examined. That’s followed by a chapter which lays out the results of relaxation response training in reducing hypertension and drug use. Chapter 7 is an explanation of how to achieve the desired state that generalizes beyond the specific approach of TM. The last chapter is a brief summary.I found this book to be both interesting and informative. It’s useful both as a practical guide to practice and an explanation of related information.I’d recommend “The Relaxation Response” for anyone who is interested in learned to de-stress. It’s a classic, and the new edition offers substantial updates.

This is a great book to learn about methods of controlling stress and perhaps relieving pain. I purchased the first edition in 1975 and this edition has been updated and should be a valuable asset to living. The Relaxation Response itself has worked for me for a very long time. There has been a great deal of research that has gone into this book and worth the read.

I understand why some say this could be shorter and why some say not. For those struggling with anxiety this could be an overwhelming read. Please read chapter 7 and nothing else if that is the case. If you are really wanting all the information given that's great but I wasn't really wanting a lesson on how stress effects the body.I am excited to actually start using the technique but wish the book would have been more about that. Like going through each point given about the technique and what could be used as a mental device. Like if you chose to "gaze" what would be a good thing to look at?I wrote out on paper the notes I need to actually do the technique because that's all I really wanted from the book anyways!I do think this has great potential and the entire book was an easy read but like I said for some could be overwhelming or even cause anxiety.

One of those books that should be in everyone's library; has been on mine since originally published. We are always told, "relax." This book teaches how to relax and ultimately what it takes to sleep restfully.

Good information but the techniques you are looking for are really in one or two chapters. If you are not aware of relaxation methods and the science behind it, then the book will be very informative for you.

Wonderful introduction to mind/body medicine, this book helped immensely to take meditation out of the fringe “counter-culture “ and into the mainstream. It seems somewhat dated today, but its message is no less important today than it was when it was first published. As a Zen and MBSR teacher, this is not where I would start in learning about meditation, but for many people, it may be the right way to get started.

Still relevant, if not more so, over 4 decades after the book first published. A great foundational book for any student of meditation who wishes to understand it from a scientific perspective. Content aside, I really liked Dr. Bensons writing style, eloqent and dignified.

Amazon.com Review

New Orleans is all about food, and for centuries it has been dominated by two distinct styles, Cajun and Creole. For the uninitiated, Cajun food came out of the bayou and off the farms of southern Louisiana. Creole developed in the city with a healthy dose of European influence. Étoufées, crawfish bisque, gumbos, red beans and rice, shrimp rémoulade, bananas foster--the list is long, familiar, appetizing, and heavy. According to Emeril Lagasse, this is the classic sauced, smothered, and rouxed Old New Orleans (ONO) cooking that made the city, and Emeril, famous. But even great chefs grow bored, and when Emeril opened up his own restaurant in the Big Easy he began to experiment with ONO cooking, infusing it with new cultural influences and fresh ingredients. The result, and apt title for his debut cookbook, is Emeril's New New Orleans Cooking. The food, as you might guess, is magnificent, and the cookbook is a masterpiece. Since Emeril is an immigrant to the Big Easy (from Fall River, Massachusetts), he doesn't fear messing with local tradition and overhauling the hallowed Oysters Rockefeller into Oysters in Pernod Cream with Fried Spinach. In fact, his genius lies in his willingness to experiment and a no-holds-barred approach to flavor combinations. Sautéed Scallops with Saffron Corn Sauce or Stir-Fry of Sesame Ginger Crawfish over Fried Pasta are just a few of the examples. Along with more than 200 other recipes, it is easy to see why Emeril has become the chef of the '90s, and why New New Orleans Cooking is here to stay. --Mark O. Howerton

From Library Journal

Lagasse opened Emeril's Restaurant to raves in 1990 after several years as chef at The Commander's Palace, a New Orleans institution. His food, which he refers to as New New Orleans, or NNO, is a reinterpretation of Creole cookery, strongly influenced by Oriental, Portuguese, and Southwestern cuisines. The result is gutsy, flavorful dishes, though the juxtaposition of ingredients is sometimes startling: Crawfish Egg Rolls with Sesame Drizzle, or Spinach and Goat Cheese Salad with Andouille Dressing. There are lots of appetizing recipes here. For most collections.Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc.

I bought this as a gift the recipient. Called me gushing about it. He was a very happy person.

Keep in mind that this is Emeril's NEW new orleans cooking, and as such the recipes are definitely not the typical fare. There's only one recipe for gumbo, for instance. While this is a good companion guide to other N.O. cookbooks, I couldn't recommend this to a beginner in the field. If you're looking for classic new orleans cusine, try La Bouche Creole by Leon E. Soniat

I opened my package and found an autographed copy of the book! Totally unexpected bonus. I haven't used the book yet, but since it is from the era just before Essence of Emeril, I'm sure it is good. I got it with Paul Prudhomme's book for a nice take on New Orleans cuisine. I took a basic class on creole and Cajun cooking techniques - now it's time to try out some recipes

This was given to me and i replaced it . Great recipes from another older book

This is not a New Orleans cookbook. You will not learn how to cook local food. This is amost all overdone, 'fusion' restaurant food. Get the Richard Collins New Orleans Cookbook if your really want to know about and reproduce local food. This is a groupie book. Wasted money.

My family has been using this cookbook for years and I've finally bought a copy for myself. Everything we've tried has been delicious. The only downside is that many of the recipes are a little too involved to make without planning ahead and getting some special ingredients.

Classic book, glad I grabbed it

The four instead of five stars reflects my reaction to her writing style. She uses too many obscure words, as unusual as that is for a teacher to say. Her word choice could sometimes impact her clarity. Well worth the read though and I recommend it highly for anyone studying Latin America during the Cold War or involved with studies in genocide.

It would be false to say that I was ever truly familiar with the situation in El Salvador at any time, not truly, and what makes Didion's Salvador such an extraordinary essay is that it so thoroughly and eloquently elucidates a time and place, but does so with specifics that feel as endemic to any political crisis now, or any 100 years ago. In her first chapter, she describes her experience in El Salvador by saying "I came to understand, in a way I had not understood before, the exact mechanism of terror." Salvador is an extraordinarily precise evocation of El Salvador in 1982, of the failure of Reagan's policies there, but what makes it still relevant is exactly that evocation of mechanics, of the bodies at the morgue that add up but don't amount to a story, of the shudder of fear at the sight of headlights in a dark dining room, of the shifting game of verbiage that describes progress or failure or civil wars or assassinations. What I mean is that Salvador will move and feel familiar to anyone, and that, at the point she describes the particular failing of America that allows us to approach this conflict as "something of the familiar ineffable, as if it were taking place not in El Salvador but in a mirage of El Salvador," it will seem the most reasoned, obvious, and unsettling conclusion about national and international conflicts.

Joan Didion gleaned the essential reality of El Salvadoran society in the 1980's, after only a short stay in the country. I believe she was there as a journalist or correspondent, who based her stark account on conversations with citizens, diplomats, and military personnel, as well as her own keen eye. She showed an uncanny gift for pinpointing the elemental truth behind every minor detail. For example, she noticed that all the male folkloric dancers at a village festival were either elderly men or young boys and that the awkward steps of their dance seemed tentative and confused. This dramatized both the Civil War's near-elimination of men in their prime and the paralysis of a society lost in violence. Every anecdote is vivid and each spare sentence convinces us of the utter tragedy and senseless waste of El Salvador's Civil War. Corruption, denial and passivity caused incomprehensible human suffering, while apparently intentional ignorance granted a continuous flow of military aid from the U.S.A., despite the blatant, savage inhumanity of the Salvadoran army and the National Guard. Even Didion's mention of U.S. embassy staff language underlines their imperviousness: they nicknamed the weekly report of murdered Salvadoran citizens, "the grim-gram." In her short volume, Joan Didion provides an unforgettable glimpse of a society mired in brutality, under the blind veil of double-speak from armies and congresses on both sides of the border. If we cling to the belief that suffering has a purpose, then the graceful witness of this book will help prevent future United States blunders in foreign policy.

While this book was interesting, it was too round about in how it was written. At the end of reading it I was not sure what point the author was trying to make about El Salvador. I came away from it thinking that El Salvador is a very messed up country I would never want to visit, but I doubt that was the message the author was trying to send away.

Excellent!

After reading Slouching Toward Jeruselum I was left wanting more Didion.  Stretch's review of Salvador and my own interest in the history of U.S. involvement there made it the next logical choice.  My four children were mostly out of toddlerhood when this was happening, and my attention was again turning outward.  This was really when I first more deeply understood some new things:  my country was not the good guy, both sides in this conflict were slaughtering people, there were more than two sides, it was way more complicated than good guy vs. bad guy.  (Yeah, I'm a slow learner.)It was intriguing to see Didion's writing applied to such a topic as Salvador and the ugliness that was happening.  I especially appreciated the way she compared Salvadoran use of language to more linear U.S. language use, especially in the use of numbers.  She talked about Salvadoran use as being more generally descriptive of their world beyond numbers and into deeper meaning and how this was misunderstood by Americans.  It reminded me of a ten year old client who kept insisting there were hundreds of empty beer bottles at his dad's house.  His mom was upset and wanted him to be more specific because he was going to have to testify in court.  He was an exceptionally bright child so she could not understand nor tolerate his exaggeration.  She finally got it tho - he wasn't telling her how many bottles there were.  He was telling her how scared and overwhelmed he felt.   Didion talks about this difficulty describing Salvador in terms many of us understand, that she found herself without the words.I found this to be a balanced perspective. Regardless of what Didion thought when she first went to Salvador, she learned a lot about different "sides" and addressed that. She found it to be a multi-sided population, difficult to pigeon hole. It's an interesting and quick read at only 100 pages.  I had my first Salvadoran student in the early 2000s and wish I could have had more time with him.  I'd like current information on it if anyone has any suggestions for sources.
