Complete Idiot's Guide to Quitting Smoking, by Lowell Kleinman

Amazon.com Review

For those who feel idiotic for developing a smoking habit in the first place, the thought of quitting may seem even harder to fathom. But take heart: Lowell Kleinman, M.D., a family physician and smoking-cessation specialist (alias "Dr. Quit") teams with Deborah Messina-Kleinman, M.P.H. (who sports an equally impressive smoking-cessation résumé) to hoist smokers up and over the many habit-breaking hurdles ahead. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Quitting Smoking begins with a close look at the smoker's world: how the habit begins, the physical and psychological pros and cons of nicotine, and why quitting hurts. The next section provides excellent information on cessation tools (nicotine patches, medications, support groups, acupuncture, hypnosis), the frightening anatomy of a cigarette, and work pages to help you customize a quitting strategy. Then it's time to quit. A seven-day countdown to Quit Day helps smokers develop an accountability network, focus on their goal, even to make plans for all the money they'll save. Special attention to the first 24 smoke-free hours addresses cravings and how to beat them; the 48-hour check-in delves into withdrawal, focuses on the physical benefits already taking place, and encourages healthy rewards. Throughout the book, the authors provide "smoke signals" (quick definitions of terms related to smoking), often surprising nutshell statistics called "pack facts," and excellent written exercises charmingly titled "buttkickers." But perhaps most helpful are the Kleinmans' true understanding and advice regarding the dark side of quitting: depression, anxiety, and weight gain. Pages of warm encouragement are accompanied by multiple proven techniques to conquer these and other quitters' enemies. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Quitting Smoking can be applauded for its somewhat humorous yet quite intelligent approach to a dead-serious topic. --Liane Thomas

This book is complete, it considers any kind of smokers and any kind of scenario to get you prepared , if you already decided you want to quit . I would recommend to read a little every day instead of going through it fast, cause it enforces your decision little by little and it's like you get your dose daily. It's not a brainwashing , it just follows you step by step and it s also pleasant to read. But again, it's no magic, you have to be sure you want to quit and ready to do what it takes . The fact that it sounds like it's been written by smokers helps you feel understood in the difficulty of the decision. The only reason for the 4 stars and not five is that it is not a device to quit. If you are not really into that, it might remain just an interesting , entertaining reading.

this book was a gift to a friend who smokes and needs to quit. I hope she uses it but so far she hasn't committed herself.

I have been a 1 pack-a-day-smoker for about 25 years and even though the physical need and mental desire to quit became stronger every year, I just couldn't do it or 'stay quit'. Tried about 4 times with success-rates averaging from a few weeks to a few (3) months ... But at some point, I picked up that cigarette again. And usually I didn't even have a good reason. So basically I wanted desperately to be motivated enough to quit for good now. This book provided me literally with e v e r y t h i n g I always wanted (and needed) to know about smoking & quitting. An informed person, I was then gently taken by the hand and even more gently guided to never-smoke-again-land. Who would ever have imagined that I would be eagerly & impatiently waiting for the day I would (finally!) be a l l o w e d to quit !... This book got me to that point. And beyond smoking... And now, over 1 smoke-free year later, I'm still enjoying my new life. Without having killed my friends/family/collegues/myself in the process... So I would like to extend my infinite thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Quit for the precious information and extremely motivating guidance they provide in this quit-smoking bible... A definite recommendation : reads like a good novel, puts quite a few smiles on your face and last but not least...(don't say I didn't warn you !) there's a 95 percent chance that you won't make it to the end of this book smoking ! Wanna bet ?

I've tried everything to quit smoking, hypnosis, patches, acupuncture, cold turkey (at least 100 times), and nothing has worked for more than 3 months. I went to the library one day, and this book caught my eye, thank goodness. It is a wealth of information for a smoker wanting desperately to quit. From this book, I have developed my "3 W" plan (Water,Walk, and Web). And for me, it's working. Question: When is the website going to be ready? (drandmrsquit.com)

Ms Jemison is endlessly inventive and I think she writes that way: even she doesn't know how it's all going to end, so I was pleased when she managed to add more detail to her worlds, let us know what happened to some characters (one I think is her or someone she knows) and tie up the cosmology in the end... life goes on. It does to some degree have that feeling of a magazine serial, for a while it felt like a detective novel, at other times, relationships, introducing new characters, The plot lines and themes are all over the place - with some suggestion of "you know what I mean" politics but at the end I had that sad feeling when you finish the last page and have bid goodbye to the world and its characters. A good read if you maintain a soft focus and not too worried about making it to the end.

I *really* enjoyed the 1st book in the trilogy but books 2 & 3 were, for me, just OK. I was glad to find out what happened later to the characters, and the author really did keep bringing characters from previous books back into later books (either referencing them, giving more details about them, them reappearing, or the like) but ... somehow I simply didn't find the stories themselves as compelling, the world as novel. That said, I think I liked book 3 second best because I liked the bonded threesome of brother, sister & Sieh and book 2 least of all but, of course, if one gets attached to the characters one wants to just keep reading.I'd say, if money's tight and you'll only buy a few books this year ... borrow from library to make sure you love all 3 before buying the entire trilogy.

Since I first opened the opening to this series, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (The Inheritance Trilogy), I have been absolutely hooked. NK Jemisin creates a world with its rules, its own cultures and an entirely original fabric of reality. Yet, in this deeply original world, she brings profoundly human characters - even when, in fact, these characters are not human at all. This is especially the case in this, the final of the series, where the protagonist of the story is one of the gods of the earlier books. From the first book, Sieh, the god of childhood, has been one of the most lovable and intriguing characters. The reader has seen him from many sides through the eyes of the protagonists of the first two installments and now gets to go inside Sieh's own mind and see this complex character from the inside out. In this final installment, Sieh confronts a deeply personal challenge with massive consequences for the very fabric of the universe. One of the things I deeply appreciate about Jemisin is that she only shows us the important bits. Some authors feel the need to fill in every step of the way, leaving in dull scenes that move the story forward in only the most predictable way. Jemisin resists the urge and every page, every interlude, every meditation deepens and nuances the reader's understanding of the development of the characters and the plot. She gives time to show internal development, also resisting the urge to rush, but she is never boring. My favourite of the series remains the second book, the The Broken Kingdoms (The Inheritance Trilogy), but the Kingdom of Gods in a worthy finale.

I can’t determine whether this book is better or not than the Broken Earth Trilogy, for I loved this series too! I can say though, that this author is at the very top of my list for amazing fantasy writing and I cannot put her books down!!This storyline was incredible and I love the worlds N.K. Jemesin brings you into with her writing. I have read every single book series she has written thus far and have loved each of them equally, but also more than any other books I’ve read!! I can’t wait until she publishes her next series!Definitely a must read for Fantasy Lovers!!

N.K. Jemisin outdid herself on this last and final installment of the Inheritance Trilogy. Was it as surprising and revelatory as the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms? No, but the book was all the better for it. The first book in the series, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, introduced the reader to a sumptuous fantasy land and created an intricate magical system that was something out of the ordinary even in this genre. I didn't expect to like the first book as much as I did and skimmed through the first 20 pages before Jemisin's detailed and thorough writing style sucked me in. I strongly feel the first book deserved to win the Hugo and Nebula Awards. As other reviewers noted, you should read the other books in the series before reading this book. Some series allow you to pick up in the middle but Jemisin doesn't bother with this convention. She dispenses with the formulaic introductions and places trust in the reader making the story more intimate and emotional. This last book is all about Sieh, the godling offspring of the two gods central to the first two books: Yeine and Nahadoth, two of the three creators of the universe. Sieh is a trickster godling who is the embodiment of childhood with all a child's wonder, brutality, and justice intact. Sieh has been a favorite of mine and I'm glad he got his own story. Jemisin set up her enormous universe in the first two books with god structures, races and stunning lands described in lush detail. The Kingdom of the Gods is where she went all out on character development focusing solely on one person rather than dividing her attention. I teared up a little at the end but the series ended well and I was OK with letting it go.Other reviewers took note of Sieh's bisexuality but I don't think much emphasis was placed on his sexuality in the book and it was more about equal opportunity love rather than his gender preferences. Knowing Sieh, he would probably have relations with an alien of indeterminate gender if he felt so inclined. In summary, I liked the book. Not as much as Hundred Thousand Kingdoms but better than the Broken Kingdom. She ended the series well and I don't feel a need to clamor for more stories from this universe (although I might be tempted). For readers looking for more, I thought her universe and story development were similar to Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion cycle.

"The Gown", by British author Jennifer Robson, is historical fiction written in a favorite style for authors these days. Namely, there are multiple points of view - in this case, three - and operating in different time periods, two in Robson's book. The story's focal point is Princess Elizabeth's wedding dress and the interest and attendant commotion it caused in the post WW2 Britain. The government and the Royal Family threw caution to the wind after years of war-time and post-war economy and rationing and gave Elizabeth and her (dishy) groom, Philip Mountbatten, a real celebration.Part of most wedding hooplas, of course, is the wedding dress. Elizabeth's was handmade at the fashion firm of Norman Hartnell. Hartnell had been dressing the Royal family, as well as other aristocrats and general rich people since the 1920's. He and his firm were the obvious choice to design THE dress for the November, 1947 wedding. Jennifer Robson focuses on two of Hartnell's embroiderers in her story.Robson writes in her Afterword that she wanted to write about the Royal Wedding, but not from the usual viewpoint of the bride or members of the wedding party. She chose to write using the two women - both at odds and ends in post-war Britain. Ann, a young woman from Barking, has worked at Hartnell for 10 years or so and has worked her way up in the Hartnell studio. Miriam is a refugee from France, who arrives in London both with a recommendation from Christian Dior and a lot of secrets she's not willing or able to disclose. She gets a job at Hartnell and she and Ann share a house. The third character of the story is Ann's granddaughter, Heather, who lives in current-day Toronto. Her beloved "Gran" has died and she - like her old friend, Miriam, has gone to her grave with lots of untold secrets.Jennifer Robson brings both the plot and the characters together, and makes the time span of 70 or so years between 1947 and 2015 disappear. She's a good writer and the book, while somewhat predicable. I assume it would be a good book club selection. Is it great literature? No, but it's a good read.

Jennifer Robson’s novel THE GOWN captures a time and place with such exquisite detail. Historical fiction fans, royal watchers, and fashion lovers behold this book! Robson has woven a story about post-war time England when times were terribly dismal – think rationing, jobs were grueling and often served only to make ends meet, if that, and life was just hard. But, Princess Elizabeth’s upcoming royal wedding was soon to take place and all of London was a buzz. Everyone awaited to see what she was going to wear and even in grim 1947, pre-social media, people were clamoring a glimpse of the design of yes, a dress. Perhaps, a sparkle of hope.A young woman who lost her entire family, but not hope, had the talent and the good fortune to work as an embroider for the designer of the soon to be Queen’s wedding gown. Her impending friendship with a new colleague transforms both of their lives and a generation to come.A magnificent story unfolds of friendship, romance, family, and the ties that bind.

What a splendid book. The cover is gorgeous, the story fascinating. The story of the women and the designer who created Queen Elizabeth's wedding dress is a gripping tale. There are some unexpected twists in the story as Heather travels to London to seek answers about her grandmother's mysterious past, only to discover much more than she bargained for. The best part was the little snippets the author shared about meeting and interviewing one of the very women who worked on the dress. I waited months to get my hands on this book and it was worth every impatient minute I experienced.

A thoughtful handling of the difficulties faced after WW ll by the those impacted directly by the horrors of death and destruction and the resultant lack of resources in England and France. Opposing this is a story of hope and beauty with the design and exceptional sewing of the intricate beading of the wedding dress of Princess Elizabeth - a skillful art only a few possess or attain. As I am also an needle arts enthusiast, I especially appreciated this treatment of a little understood art form.

I was attracted to The Gown by the plot summary, so I bought the Kindle edition. While the plot is indeed good, the character development drives the novel and contributes to its realism. Robson created a genuine, honest group of believable people in this story and showed solid attention to multiple details. There were a couple of nice twists in character relationships that added depth and interest. While the story dealt with hard issues of life in and after WWII, the story is never gloomy because the characters maintain hope despite struggle and hardship. The appendices offer insight into Robson’s process, the genesis of the story, and, they open a window into the life of the living seamstresses who the novelist had the chance to interview for the book. This was my first novel by Robson and it was a very pleasant read.

When I was very young, one of my aunts was super interested in then Princess Elizabeth. If they had had TV back in the day, she would have been up at 5 in the morning watching the Royal Wedding. My aunt was also a good seamstress, and perfection was her goal, so these points of interest combined with the fact she was my favorite aunt, piqued my interest from the very beginning. I never knew much about the living conditions in Great Britain after WWII, so this book was a good history book for me. The story line was good once I got the hang of switching back and forth among the characters and the generations, and I found the characters to be interesting and believable. I highly recommend this book!
