Ms Jemison is endlessly inventive and I think she writes that way: even she doesn't know how it's all going to end, so I was pleased when she managed to add more detail to her worlds, let us know what happened to some characters (one I think is her or someone she knows) and tie up the cosmology in the end... life goes on. It does to some degree have that feeling of a magazine serial, for a while it felt like a detective novel, at other times, relationships, introducing new characters, The plot lines and themes are all over the place - with some suggestion of "you know what I mean" politics but at the end I had that sad feeling when you finish the last page and have bid goodbye to the world and its characters. A good read if you maintain a soft focus and not too worried about making it to the end.

I *really* enjoyed the 1st book in the trilogy but books 2 & 3 were, for me, just OK. I was glad to find out what happened later to the characters, and the author really did keep bringing characters from previous books back into later books (either referencing them, giving more details about them, them reappearing, or the like) but ... somehow I simply didn't find the stories themselves as compelling, the world as novel. That said, I think I liked book 3 second best because I liked the bonded threesome of brother, sister & Sieh and book 2 least of all but, of course, if one gets attached to the characters one wants to just keep reading.I'd say, if money's tight and you'll only buy a few books this year ... borrow from library to make sure you love all 3 before buying the entire trilogy.

Since I first opened the opening to this series, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (The Inheritance Trilogy), I have been absolutely hooked. NK Jemisin creates a world with its rules, its own cultures and an entirely original fabric of reality. Yet, in this deeply original world, she brings profoundly human characters - even when, in fact, these characters are not human at all. This is especially the case in this, the final of the series, where the protagonist of the story is one of the gods of the earlier books. From the first book, Sieh, the god of childhood, has been one of the most lovable and intriguing characters. The reader has seen him from many sides through the eyes of the protagonists of the first two installments and now gets to go inside Sieh's own mind and see this complex character from the inside out. In this final installment, Sieh confronts a deeply personal challenge with massive consequences for the very fabric of the universe. One of the things I deeply appreciate about Jemisin is that she only shows us the important bits. Some authors feel the need to fill in every step of the way, leaving in dull scenes that move the story forward in only the most predictable way. Jemisin resists the urge and every page, every interlude, every meditation deepens and nuances the reader's understanding of the development of the characters and the plot. She gives time to show internal development, also resisting the urge to rush, but she is never boring. My favourite of the series remains the second book, the The Broken Kingdoms (The Inheritance Trilogy), but the Kingdom of Gods in a worthy finale.

I can’t determine whether this book is better or not than the Broken Earth Trilogy, for I loved this series too! I can say though, that this author is at the very top of my list for amazing fantasy writing and I cannot put her books down!!This storyline was incredible and I love the worlds N.K. Jemesin brings you into with her writing. I have read every single book series she has written thus far and have loved each of them equally, but also more than any other books I’ve read!! I can’t wait until she publishes her next series!Definitely a must read for Fantasy Lovers!!

N.K. Jemisin outdid herself on this last and final installment of the Inheritance Trilogy. Was it as surprising and revelatory as the Hundred Thousand Kingdoms? No, but the book was all the better for it. The first book in the series, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, introduced the reader to a sumptuous fantasy land and created an intricate magical system that was something out of the ordinary even in this genre. I didn't expect to like the first book as much as I did and skimmed through the first 20 pages before Jemisin's detailed and thorough writing style sucked me in. I strongly feel the first book deserved to win the Hugo and Nebula Awards. As other reviewers noted, you should read the other books in the series before reading this book. Some series allow you to pick up in the middle but Jemisin doesn't bother with this convention. She dispenses with the formulaic introductions and places trust in the reader making the story more intimate and emotional. This last book is all about Sieh, the godling offspring of the two gods central to the first two books: Yeine and Nahadoth, two of the three creators of the universe. Sieh is a trickster godling who is the embodiment of childhood with all a child's wonder, brutality, and justice intact. Sieh has been a favorite of mine and I'm glad he got his own story. Jemisin set up her enormous universe in the first two books with god structures, races and stunning lands described in lush detail. The Kingdom of the Gods is where she went all out on character development focusing solely on one person rather than dividing her attention. I teared up a little at the end but the series ended well and I was OK with letting it go.Other reviewers took note of Sieh's bisexuality but I don't think much emphasis was placed on his sexuality in the book and it was more about equal opportunity love rather than his gender preferences. Knowing Sieh, he would probably have relations with an alien of indeterminate gender if he felt so inclined. In summary, I liked the book. Not as much as Hundred Thousand Kingdoms but better than the Broken Kingdom. She ended the series well and I don't feel a need to clamor for more stories from this universe (although I might be tempted). For readers looking for more, I thought her universe and story development were similar to Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion cycle.
