My husband is a public school teacher. Every few years the district adopts some new "program" that is supposed to boost student learning and improve test scores. What my husband has seen over the years is a constant dumbing down of the curriculum - and no better student performance. In fact, performamce is sliding. Why?Do kids need more hours at school? Year-round school? Better technology? Earlier introduction to reading? This author answers all of these questions and more with the most up-to-date research and a resounding NO. Who succeeds in school and goes on to live a productive adult life? Kids with grit, curiosity, determination, whose earliest years were a time of safety and attachment to mom. You'd think this was some fundamentalist Christian book but it is not. This is a secular book about secular schools and research by secular social scientists. The author does not create a "how to" for helping failing kids and failing schools. He simply discusses what works and what does not.Eye-opening, important book. I would highly recommend this book to school district officials, school board members, teachers, administrators, and most of all PARENTS.

Paul Toughs book starts out with a few great chapters challenging the conventional thoughts of why children in poverty do not complete their education. The basic premise student intelligence or teacher quality is not near as important as performance character traits, such as grit, executive function, self-control, optimism. These are traits that are easily formed in children growing up in stress free environments with plenty of parent attention and affection, but are missing is children growing up in poverty with disjointed families, drug abuse, and other forms of chronic stress. But after these first few chapters, the book really falters. Its like the book is a collection of essays or articles on school reform, which are then tacked together loosely with this idea of character helping children succeed. And while each chapter is well researched and referenced, the cumulative result is a lot of contradictory data, and no response to the question you wish this book would answer: How do children succeed? What do I mean by contradictory data? Well, despite the premise that teacher quality does not matter much, the book spends a lot of time praising innovative teachers or teaching programs. Despite giving research to show that ACT/SAT scores are not a good indicator of college graduation, he examines how some schools have been successful in getting their povery students into colleges by cramming them for the ACT tests. And despite showing how learning chess can teach character skills like patience, determination, etc, the book also demonstrates that skills on the chess board do not necessarily translate to skills in the classroom or in the real world. Near the end of the book, Tough even admits that all of the studies that have identified what matters most in raising test scores and graduation rates of children living in poverty is misleading, because in reality the majority of improvements found by these innovative teaching methods are found in children that are poor enough to qualify for school meal plans, but not technically living below the poverty line.Perhaps the most upsetting point of the book was near the end when Tough (who grew up middle to upper middle class) tries to relate to the poverty students by describing the time he dropped out of Columbia his freshman year and using his tuition money to take a Kerouac-esque bicycle trip. Tough uses this story to describe how this trip helped him take risks and build character traits that were not formed in school, and how this helped him succeed. I am uncomfortable with comparing a person with the financial means and support to voluntarily quit school, knowing his family is there as a safety net, to go play hooky, and a person living in poverty subjected to various external stresses, but is able to have the self control to focus and better themselves. In the end, the hypothesis Tough proposed early in this book is contradicted by his later chapters, and the question of how all children can succeed is never answered. Implementation of the subject matter is this book is absent besides hugging your children.

Following the footsteps of Jonathan Kozol, Paul Tough employs his significant storytelling abilities to help readers see and feel the plight of children, families and communities trapped in cycles of failure and poverty. How Children Succeed challenges some conventional wisdom on causes of failure (poverty, teacher quality) and contends that nurturing character in children and young adults is the key to success. As a former NYC Teaching Fellow who has lived and worked in multiple communities of cyclical poverty, I'm convinced that Tough has nailed some critical pieces of breaking those cycles. Here is the argument in brief:==============================There exists in our society a troubling and growing achievement gap between the have and the have-nots. The cause of that gap is neither merely poverty nor IQ, but a specific set of non-cognitive skills including executive function and conscientiousness, which Tough calls "character." Children who acquire these skills can break historic cyclical patterns of failure.Malleability of Character and Intelligence==========================================Whereas IQ is hardly malleable, executive function and character strengths - specifically grit, self-control, zest, social intelligence, gratitude, optimism, curiosity and conscientiousness - are far more malleable. These skills are better predictors of academic performance and educational achievement than IQ and therefore ought to be the direct target of interventions.Attachment and Lifelong Health==============================Tough sees two key areas of influence for those who care for those trapped in cycles of poverty. The first is secure early attachment to parents. "The effect of good parenting is not just emotional or psychological, the neuroscientists say; it is biochemical" (28). Specifically, children who experience high levels of stress but NOT responsive and nurturing parents suffer from a range of lifelong health and mental health issues. However, "When mothers scored high on measures of responsiveness, the impact of those environmental factors on their children seemed to almost disappear" (32). Tough cites one study in which "early parental care predicted which students would graduate even more reliably than IQ or achievement test scores" (36). Importantly, interventions that focus on promoting stronger parent-child relationships in high risk groups (including one in which just 1 of 137 infants studied demonstrated secure attachment at the outset) have shown promising impact. Of the 137 children in the study, 61% of those in the treatment group formed secure attachment by age 2, compared with only 2% of the control group.Adolescent Character Formation==============================Paul Tough highlights the work of school and support programs that intentionally focus on forming the character strength habits that enable children to learn well in schools, form healthy relationships, and avoid the destructive decisions and behavior patterns modeled in their communities. Here, too, Tough sees a ray of hope. Just as early intervention with parents and young children yields wide ranging benefits for families in poverty, so character interventions in adolescence can and do enable young adults surrounded by cycles of poverty to learn self-control, perseverance and focus that are critical for escaping the gravitational pull of their communities. Why You Should Read This Book=============================Paul Tough is tackling one of the most challenging - and contentious - issues of our time. His analysis will offend those who tend to blame poverty predominantly on the irresponsible choices of the poor by showing just how powerful the cyclical, environmental pressures are on children raised in these communities. His work is just as challenging to those who think that those trapped in cycles of poverty are mere victims of their environment who bear no responsibility for their decisions. Tough shows compellingly that parents and children in poverty can and do overcome the powerful environmental forces of their communities - and that this is a beautiful and essential component of breaking cyclical poverty. His call is for those with education and influence - the kinds of people who read books like his - to demonstrate motivation and volition (two components of character formation he extols) to recognize, celebrate, and nurture the character of children and families in poverty.Graham ScharfAuthor, The Apprenticeship of Being Human: Why Early Childhood Parenting Matters to Everyone[...]

Before you start this book, please note it is a continuation of the author’s Amos Decker Memory Man series. I would start with the first book, Memory Man, and then read the rest of the series in order before this edition or you won’t make much sense of the characters and situations.Bottom line is if you enjoyed the previous books of the series you will enjoy this one, also. Baldacci picks up where he left off with the cast of characters and does his usual good job of changing the twists and plot lines: I stayed up really late with an unsuccessful effort to finish it because I didn’t want to put it down. I recommend this one for those who have enjoyed the series, and I’m ready for the next installment.

We all acknowledge David Baldacci is a master storyteller. This book exemplifies how an author can spin a story like a tapestry, and let it unfold at its own pace. Amos Decker and his partner are visiting her sister in Barronsville, PA, a small town. Amos stumbles into a crime scene, and what unfolds is a harrowing story that takes in today's headlines, the opioid crisis, and takes Decker and Jaimieson on an epic investigation that leads to some surprising conclusions. On the way we they make some new friends. And enemies. In the end, Amos finds himself more in touch with his humanity than since his injury, and Baldacci shows us humanity and kindness in the middle of sorrow and loss. This was a great book, and interesting investigation, and showed Amos Decker making progress in regaining a degree of his humanity he has not known since his injury and the subsequent loss of his wife and daughter. Baldacci, like Brad Thor, Lee Child, and Ted Bell, invest a lot in inventing their characters. We have an emotional stake in them as well. This, my friends, is as good as it gets.

What an incredible, heart-grabbing, mind-blowing mystery! Amos Decker, along with his partner, is supposed to be on vacation at her sister’s place. Jamison understands Decker’s uniqueness and has a great platonic working relationship with him. While they are there Decker observes some rather disturbing sights in a house that he runs to investigate. Jamison knows there goes the vacation as she refuses to sit on the sideline while Amos chases down leads. Plus, within a short time, the mystery embroils her sister’s family when her husband is killed while at work.Jamison’s 6-year-old niece loses her father on her birthday and that just grips the heart of Amos in so many ways. If you have followed the Memory Man series, you know how this touches Amos very deeply and makes him face some of his own personal losses again. Readers familiar with the uniqueness of how Amos thinks and works will really enjoy the way David Baldacci has Amos going through some neurological changes. These changes cause Amos to think long term and wonder exactly how long he can keep working without losing what memory he has left. The ending of the book is very touching, and I absolutely loved the way its is written! I hope this isn’t the last we see of Decker and Jamison as I enjoy them working together on solving crimes. Zoe, the little girl in the story, really grabbed my heart and I loved how it drew out the heart of Amos. The mystery was top notch and many surprises are in store for those who venture into the book. You don’t want to miss this thriller! If you haven’t read Amos Decker in the Memory Man series, start with the first book titled, Memory Man and catch up in the series before the next novel is released!

This installment in the Amos Decker/Memory Man series was somewhat of a letdown. Carrying far too much complexity with far too many one dimensional characters, I’m afraid that this work “The Fallen” appears to be an idea in Baldacci’s mind that seemed to get rushed onto paper far too quickly without the advantage of proper pre-thought of how seductive it might appear or appeal to the reader. This got way too complicated way too fast with far too many characters doing far too many things and with virtually none of them registering on the interest scale. What could have been an interesting plotline turned into an amalgam of killings followed by page after page of explanation of what we’d just read. It was like Baldacci organized his story-line index cards, wrote the book to these and then realized, “Hey, this is pretty complicated, I better insert some explanations along the way.” And the absolute worst part was the very end when all the survivors gathered together for a final “let’s explain all of the aspects of this entire book” session, much like at the end of each of the Scooby-Doo episodes…I kept expecting Shaggy to interject some benign point followed by Scoob uttering “Rutt-Rooww.”OK, it’s not entirely that bad but it is a far cry from the initial Memory Man. We start in Baronville, Pennsylvania with Amos and his partner Alex Jamison on vacation, visiting Alex’s sister. And this is another “bone to pick” with Baldacci…he’d ended the previous Decker book with an enticing note of impending romance between these two and the notion of them on “vacation” together gives the reader hope of this relationship advancing. I’ll stop you right there…there is NO ADVANCEMENT one way or the other in this book, NOTHING! Whether Baldacci does this on purpose or not, we’ll have to wait for the next installment.Baronville is a rundown, post-industry town with a serious opiod problem. One evening Decker discovers a series of murders and his “vacation” turns into an investigation. Through an, again, unusual and complex series of events, we learn of the town’s originator, the family of John Baron the first and of an alleged treasure left behind when he died at his mansion high up at the town’s outskirts. Intrigue, dubious and sinister characters, drugs and murder all get interwoven into a plot that only Decker seems able to figure out. Going far beyond his “memory man” capabilities here (in my opinion) he’s able to determine all angles and all outcomes in the end, most, it seems to me, by just educated guesses. I had to re-read many paragraphs just to understand what had been uncovered at that particular point and by the end, I just gave up, actually skimming through most of the explanations because I found that I didn’t really care anymore. There were some heartwarming moments admittedly…Decker shows a new side of himself when he deals with Alex’s niece, five year Zoe, who reminds him of his own daughter. But the overall vibe here is that this is a book that was just so rushed and un-edited that it does a dis-service to the character. We’re used to a certain quality with an Amos Decker work and we definitely do not get it here. And gauging by the reviews here on Amazon, Baldacci can only deduce that he’s still striking the right chord, which is a shame…I really wonder how many of these positive reviews aren’t emoting their true feelings. I know that I totally loved the previous three in this series and it’s difficult to pan this work, but it’s necessary…this is definitely not a great book.

This was an intense read through out. Loved the ending. Amos becoming compassionate and empathetic added depth to his character. I was so disappointed in Baldacci's last Will Robi novel that I almost didn't buy this one. This book is the Baldacci that I have enjoyed for many years.

I seldom review books as I find that other reviews are sufficient. Although that's true for this book , I feel compelled to add my voice to those who find this a great Sharepoint book.Over the last 6 months or so I've spent some time using or learning SharePoint, as such I have an "okay" idea of what SharePoint is, and an understanding of general end user functionality as well as the business value it provides. However as a Business Analyst it was important for me to understand how Sharepoint components fit together. I've waded through the Microsoft sites, Sharepoint blogs, and two other books but just encountered a list of features and marketing mumbo jumbo. After reading this book, I was able to develop a mental model of Sharepoint 2010, and understand how the major Sharepoint components/concepts fit together to deliver value to users. If you are a business analyst and want to gain command of sharepoint, I strongly recommend that you start with this book, and then I would strongly recommend Essential SharePoint 2010: Overview, Governance, and Planning (Addison-Wesley Microsoft Technology Series) Thank you Mr. Cawood.

This book is an excellent starting point in learning SharePoint 2010. The title is a bit misleading because it definitely does not cover EVERYTHING, but it is easy enough for even the not-so-computer-savvy person can use it.Overall, I would recommend this book if you don't know much about SharePoint 2010. But if you already know about forms, lists, and document libraries, this book may not provide too much for you. It still has some good information on Web Parts and Customization, but if you are looking for an advanced book, you may want to look elsewhere.

Book arrived yesterday and when opened it, the pages were faded. No, this was not a used book, I bought it new! The pages and the pictures in the book looked as if there were copied from the original. There are icons and pictures in the book that look as if there were originally supposed to be in color. In fact, some of the pictures and illustrations are just play hard to read any detail that would make them usable. Seriously considering returning the book.

I have tried several times to use this book but have been unable to find what I needed. For instance, searching for info on using workflows I went to the index but only found 3 entries that included the words "workflow". None of them were helpful. I bought this book because it said it was "how to do everything", however so far that's not been the case. It's a fine summary of the SharePoint 2010 software but not a good detailed reference book.

Delivery was good. Information was not helpful. Does not tell you how to do everything. The help in sharepoint is as helpful.

Very informative. Good read

As is the norm with anything I order from Amazon, the book arrived in record time, well packaged and in perfectly new condition. I should probably mention that I'm an Amazon Prime member, so pretty much everything arrives in two days! I did a fair amount of research (via Amazon reviews and other sites) before buying this particular SharePoint guide, and it was time well spent. The book offers a concise overview of everything that SharePoint 2010 has to offer, which is useful to a new user like myself. I don't consider it a good 'How To' resource, but definitely a valuable addition to my library. So I developed a routine to compensate: first I read about a particular feature of the software for understanding, then I use Google to search for the 'step-by-step' instructions! :)

I've been working with Sharepoint for about a year. My company recently upgraded to the 2010 version. I bought this book to bridge my knowledge from the previous to the current software. I am so disappointed. The screenshots are great, but there are almost no instructions. There are only brief descriptions of the features, which I really didn't need.I wasn't able to find anything I needed in this book. I've been finding all the information I need by performing google searches. There are all kinds of helpful tidbits out there.Bottom line--don't waste your money on this book.

Amazon.com Review

As his fifth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry approaches, 15-year-old Harry Potter is in full-blown adolescence, complete with regular outbursts of rage, a nearly debilitating crush, and the blooming of a powerful sense of rebellion. It's been yet another infuriating and boring summer with the despicable Dursleys, this time with minimal contact from our hero's non-Muggle friends from school. Harry is feeling especially edgy at the lack of news from the magic world, wondering when the freshly revived evil Lord Voldemort will strike. Returning to Hogwarts will be a relief... or will it? The fifth book in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series follows the darkest year yet for our young wizard, who finds himself knocked down a peg or three after the events of last year. Somehow, over the summer, gossip (usually traced back to the magic world's newspaper, the Daily Prophet) has turned Harry's tragic and heroic encounter with Voldemort at the Triwizard Tournament into an excuse to ridicule and discount the teen. Even Professor Dumbledore, headmaster of the school, has come under scrutiny by the Ministry of Magic, which refuses to officially acknowledge the terrifying truth that Voldemort is back. Enter a particularly loathsome new character: the toadlike and simpering ("hem, hem") Dolores Umbridge, senior undersecretary to the Minister of Magic, who takes over the vacant position of Defense Against Dark Arts teacher--and in no time manages to become the High Inquisitor of Hogwarts, as well. Life isn't getting any easier for Harry Potter. With an overwhelming course load as the fifth years prepare for their Ordinary Wizarding Levels examinations (O.W.Ls), devastating changes in the Gryffindor Quidditch team lineup, vivid dreams about long hallways and closed doors, and increasing pain in his lightning-shaped scar, Harry's resilience is sorely tested. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, more than any of the four previous novels in the series, is a coming-of-age story. Harry faces the thorny transition into adulthood, when adult heroes are revealed to be fallible, and matters that seemed black-and-white suddenly come out in shades of gray. Gone is the wide-eyed innocent, the whiz kid of Sorcerer's Stone. Here we have an adolescent who's sometimes sullen, often confused (especially about girls), and always self-questioning. Confronting death again, as well as a startling prophecy, Harry ends his year at Hogwarts exhausted and pensive. Readers, on the other hand, will be energized as they enter yet again the long waiting period for the next title in the marvelous, magical series. (Ages 9 and older) --Emilie Coulter

From School Library Journal

Grade 4 Up-Harry has just returned to Hogwarts after a lonely summer. Dumbledore is uncommunicative and most of the students seem to think Harry is either conceited or crazy for insisting that Voldemort is back and as evil as ever. Angry, scared, and unable to confide in his godfather, Sirius, the teen wizard lashes out at his friends and enemies alike. The head of the Ministry of Magic is determined to discredit Dumbledore and undermine his leadership of Hogwarts, and he appoints nasty, pink-cardigan-clad Professor Umbridge as the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher and High Inquisitor of the school, bringing misery upon staff and students alike. This bureaucratic nightmare, added to Harry's certain knowledge that Voldemort is becoming more powerful, creates a desperate, Kafkaesque feeling during Harry's fifth year at Hogwarts. The adults all seem evil, misguided, or simply powerless, so the students must take matters into their own hands. Harry's confusion about his godfather and father, and his apparent rejection by Dumbledore make him question his own motives and the condition of his soul. Also, Harry is now 15, and the hormones are beginning to kick in. There are a lot of secret doings, a little romance, and very little Quidditch or Hagrid (more reasons for Harry's gloom), but the power of this book comes from the young magician's struggles with his emotions and identity. Particularly moving is the unveiling, after a final devastating tragedy, of Dumbledore's very strong feelings of attachment and responsibility toward Harry. Children will enjoy the magic and the Hogwarts mystique, and young adult readers will find a rich and compelling coming-of-age story as well.Eva Mitnick, Los Angeles Public LibraryCopyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

SPECIAL NOTE: For U.S. customers purchasing the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, you will notice the text has NOT been converted to the "Americanized" version of the original U.S. releases (with the exception of changing all "Philosopher's Stone" mentions to "Sorcerer's Stone"). So far, I have noticed the following: (EU/US) dialling / dialing; Shan't! / Won't!; sherbet lemon / lemon drop; motorbike / motorcycle; and dustbin / trashcan. For many purists of the series who never liked the idea of modifying the original text for an American audience, this is a good thing. Good or bad is naturally for each reader to decide--just know, if you plan to read the books while listening to Jim Dale's audiobooks, you'll notice a few superficial differences. The quality of this new illustrated edition is phenomenal. I've been excited about the release of this book since it was announced, but I never expected the book as a whole to be so well crafted.A couple of things to note:1. Underneath the book jacket, the novel is bound in a sturdy red hardback with gold lettering on the spine.2. The paper is thick with an eggshell glossy finish.3. All chapter intros are illustrated.4. Some images take up full pages or multiple pages. Most illustrations share the page with text.5. Every inch of the book is illustrated or decorated in some fashion. There are NO white pages in the book. Even the pages without large illustrations have the paper printed and marked with ink blots or paper "stains".I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to read the series (again, or for the first time), especially if you plan to read this with someone younger. If this book is a demonstration of what is to come with the illustrated editions for the rest of the series, we're all in for six more impeccable treats.

I LOVE THE STORY. Illustrations are great. PROBLEM is that the book came missing pages 153-168 because 137-152 were printed twice. It took me a week to realize this. You will want to check your books. I'm sure Amazon will take care of me but thank goodness I wasn't gifting this.

These illustrated editions of Harry Potter were done right! All of the original text is there and the artwork is beautiful. Every page has something, whether it's an illustration that takes up a full double page spread, a little drawing in the corner, a thematic border, or just a visually textured background. It may sound chaotic, like the visuals could be too much and break up the flow of reading but it is not; it enhances the story as you turn the pages and delight in the new visuals that each page brings. I imagine these would be a great way to bring children into the story, but they're so nice you may want to protect and collect these beauties. I can't wait for them to release the others.

I think this is my third reading of the Harry Potter series. The first time is a precious memory to me. Our four children would all climb into our king size bed before bedtime and we would read one or two chapters each evening. We homeschooled so, as each child's reading progressed, they read a part too. Their mom died. They're in late 20s now. Five grandkids. Those will be ready to read to before we know it. But life is not always neatly packaged. I married a widow and moved us all. Today they are off to their own lives. My four and I are scattered across four states and even overseas. So, I'm reading to myself now. I can't make a stronger recommendation than to say that I immediately purchased "The Order Of The Phoenix" after finishing this one. I also have the set in hardbound on the bookshelf beside me. But Kindle is just too convenient. *smile*

My husband tried to surprise me with this order, but we share the amazon account ;)I WAS surprised though, because I didn’t realize it would be textbook size with all these amazing scenes drawn out. They’re AH-MAY-ZING drawings!! If you love Harry Potter, you will love these books. For some reason, hubs couldn’t find the first and second of the series (I did ;p) so he bought the third first, but we know the stories by heart so it doesn’t matter to me. I hope they put out all of them! It almost feels like how I felt waiting for the actual series to come out.

This review is for the Kindle in Motion version of this book. What a delight it has been so far reading this version. The animated artwork is a wonderful addition and it really helps with the visuals in your head. There is a hardcover version of this exact book with the same artwork available. But for the price of $9.99, I think this Kindle in Motion version is well worth it. The hardcover version certainty would be a nice addition to any collection, but this Kindle version with its animations is really something special. Almost like reading the Daily Profit with its moving pictures. I really hope Kindle in Motion continues with the other books in the series as they are very fun to read. All in all, I highly recommend this specific Kindle version. Really, if you're going to shell out $8.00 anyway for the regular Kindle version, why not just go ahead and get this one. Its so much better for just a few dollars more.
