Confessions of an Iyeska

Review

“Viola Burnette was a strong Lakota woman with a deep and abiding commitment to her family, to her tribe, and to the importance of law in advancing the future and preserving the values of the past. This is her stirring story in her own words of testimony and witness.”—Frank Pommersheim, author of Broken Landscape: Indians, Indian Tribes, and the Constitution  “While other historical volumes review and analyze the intellectual impacts of government policies on Native American reservation communities, this autobiographical account puts these policies in a personal and integrated context that makes them understandable in a richer and more nuanced way. In this way, the unintended consequences of governmental policies, such as conflicting identities, can be appreciated as a lived reality, rather than an empty abstraction based on government archives and political histories.”—Kathleen Pickering Sherman, author of Lakota Culture, World Economy

I am honored to be the first to review this book on Amazon. I was so engrossed that I read it in only a few days in spite of some pretty powerful distractions. I love to read autobiographies because they expand my knowledge of the human condition and, in this case, the female condition. I don't want to give away the whole plot but I lived on a reservation for a few years and I am familiar with the obstacles to change. Viola bumped up against the same roadblocks that I did. The particular place where I lived was almost like a third world country so I can relate to her frustrations. Historically, reservation schools are not very good. The obstacles that Viola and her family overcame in order to get a good education were monumental. Her transformation from reservation child to Army wife to single mother to become the first female American Indian judge in South Dakota is truly inspiring. She did all of this while suffering from a serious health condition. Viola is truly an American hero. I hope someone options the movie rights.

I finished this amazing book in record time. I work nights and should have been sleeping, but I couldn't put it down. I didn't think I could admire Viola Burnette more than I already did. I was wrong. I had only heard snippets of some of the stories, and it was satisfying to be able to put everything in context. The narrative has a Forrest Gump quality about it, as it pulls in much of what was happening in the world, from trends to major historical events, adding yet another strand to the braid of a remarkable life. In living several diverse lives in one lifetime, Vi stands as a strong and unique role model. Her book is a precious gift of heritage and determination. To anyone who is struggling on life's journey, I would particularly recommend the chapters titled "Obstacles" and "A Paradigm Shift."

This book is wonderful! I have to admit I was not aware of the hardships our Native Americans have endured. From the start of the book, Viola grabbed my heart as she described her life as an Iyeska. I recommend this book for so many reasons but especially to open our hearts, minds, and eyes to different cultures.

As you begin Confessions on an Iyeska, you have no idea what you are in for. I couldn't put this book down from the moment I started. I don't want to give away the twists and turns, but I could not believe both the challenges this American hero overcame and the heights to which she soared. It is a lesson in the resiliency of a woman stronger than she ever knew she was, and in essence, proof that we can achieve whatever we set our minds to if we are willing to face daunting obstacles head on. Amazing work, I wish I could express my deep gratitude to Viola, may she RIP, for educating us on so many topics through her incredible life journey.

I love Viola Burnetts’s autobiography! Although I did not know her personally, her writing drew me in so that I did feel like I knew her. I could not put the book down and finished it in two nights. Viola was separated from her family on the reservation at a young age and was sent to a boarding school. Viola survived many obstacles and disappointments in her life but she kept pushing on and raised four daughters on her own. She became became an attorney, judge and Attorney General for the Rosebud Reservation, all while battling a very debilitating health condition. Viola was an amazing woman and this is an amazing story.

If you are looking for a fun, light-hearted read, THIS IS NOT IT. This is not only not a "laugh out loud" book, it isn't even funny although there are a few (very few) places in which is is slighly amusing. Mostly, it's sad and boring and depressing with characters that are not very well developed or likable. It just rambled. I gave it 2 stars because I did finish it. However, I was sorry that I wasted the time doing so instead of finding something else to read. It left me feeling a bit down when I was looking for a light, fun read after reading a couple of pretty heavy books.

What is it that we often admire about our favorite characters, especially in modern day books? It's the courage and audacity they have to start anew. To shake things up. To toss it all and dare to change their life into something they've always wanted down deep...or didn't know they needed, but was like a new dawn once they found it.Ol' Evie...a septuagenarian who is washed up. In a care home. Not really living life so much as more counting the days til it's all over. Her husband has passed, her only child, Brendan, married to a grumpy woman, Maura, and no grandkids. No hobbies. No job. No passion. No life. Her only lift each day is an early morning conversation with the Ukranian man who serves coffee and toast to all the elderly residents. Someone who doesn't treat her like she's already "mostly dead". (All reviews need a Princess Bride reference, no?)One day, she's had enough. She needs a holiday. Out of the care home she sneaks, with the idea of a few days away. To get out and away from the pull of apathy and extinction. And here is where we start to fall in love with this spunky woman. She's not savvy, not experienced in the world. But she's quick, stubborn, and witty.Once incident, one fortuitous turn, one chance meeting after another...her lucky four leaf clover and her belief in "bon chance" lead her to buy a campervan and putt around France. Passing her self off as many different hilarious characters to those who are short acquaintances, but investing in and truly caring for those whom she tarries with for longer, she becomes beloved by many. Her circle of life is growing, her mind and heart waking up to the possibility that going back is unneeded, even reprehensible. In the meantime, her son, Brendan, is on a mission to come rescue his Mammy from how bereft, lost, and helpless she must surely be. How could his mom possibly be out there, all alone? His need to rescue, to be needed by his mom, while fully denying how much his own wife is needing him, his love and care, leaves him lost. What he doesn't see is he's the one that needs rescuing. Luckily, he and Maura are bound on their own haphazard rescue mission/holiday in France as well. What makes a marriage? Especially when major disappointments hit...when you have to sit in those disappointments for years...decades? How do two imperfect people learn to love each other in the mundane of everyday life? What makes a life? What is expected of us as we age? Can a life be fully lived, even to the end? We've all seen those who've given up...who are just counting the days til it's over, stuck in a depression of belief that there's not anything worth getting out of the La-Z-Boy for?Evie gives us a new set of beliefs. Her stubborn defiance of old age, of giving up and throwing in the towel. Her demand for adventures and fresh air and new relationships...her love of delicious food, fine wine, and better company drives her to places that both inspire shock and admiration. Not to mention a whole community that is there for her when life inevitably takes a hard turn. And Brendan and Maura? I'm certainly not going spoil their story, but let's just say that a road trip through France will bring about so many changes if they are needed, and if you decide that life is worth living fully. And isn't it?Judy Leigh's characters in this novel are us in our worst moments: depressed and irritable, angry and quick to shift blame, prone to distraction from our pain and disappointment. But they are also us at our best: loving and funny, kind and devoted, hopeful and busy enjoying life to the full. Most of all, we see that luck isn't needed when we learn to enjoy the present. That each day is a gift, each minute a chance to be thankful, to look outside of ourselves to see the beauty and goodness all around us. To see that to give up is to miss out on our own life, and while none of us knows how many days we may have left on this earth, we can learn how to be grateful and embrace all that we've been today.

Evie is a 75 year old widow living in a Dublin nursing home. Her dutiful son Brendan and his wife Maura visit her conscientiously. But there’s plenty of life left in Evie and one night she decides that life will not be lived in a nursing home. So she leaves and embarks on an adventure, going first to Liverpool (after winning a nice nest egg on a horse race) and then to France where she discovers a new way of living. What is different about this book is that the heroine is 75 years old, nine years older than I am. With the gusto and stamina that I don’t think I ever had, even in my 20s. Her adventure has its ups and downs but it’s Evie’s attitude and insight that lifts the story, makes it memorable. The side story, of her son Brendan and his wife Maura, coming to their own realization about their lives, added to the book although Evie will be the character I will remember. Perhaps when I am 75....

This is an excellent book. Intense character studies. But I defy anyone to find this "laugh out loud funny" OR a ""romantic comedy"! It is an uplifting self discovery adventure born out of despair and loneliness and culminating in sadness and renewal. NOT A SINGLE LAUGH, not even one I could have missed!

Unlike some others, I found this to be a great read. I enjoyed Evie and her break from the boredom of the retirement home. I enjoyed her trying out new things. It did not have one laugh out loud moment after the other, but it is cute and serious at the same time. I found it to have some things to say that were relevant to me. I found myself wishing I were a bit less of an introvert. Does it have sad spots, yes, it is not a roaring comedy. For those getting older or thinking about the issues of getting older, it might be a good read.

Why this would be listed as a romance book or a funny book is a mystery as it is neither. The first half of the book is depressing and then the story comes to life. Evie's story is a life journey and this book is about much more than laugh-out-loud laughter. I would have enjoyed the book much more if I had not been waiting for it to change into something it was not. I do wish it had been focused more on the brave & positive Evie who has a lot to show us about living fully.

When her husband does suddenly Evie feels as if her life is over. She enters a care home for the aged where she is visited by her son and his overly critical wife. One day, irritated by the routine and the boredom, Evie decides she needs a day out. What follows is an adventure involving horse racing, Liverpool, France and love. This hilarious novel knows that while seventy is not the new forty, there's still time to shake things up

Age is just a number and you to enjoy everyday of your life. The message is clear to live life to the fullest, enjoy friendships and new experiences. This book could be a movie because it is so inspiring and well written. I enjoyed every page and Evie made me laugh and cry.
