If you're as fascinated about Alaska and the Arctic as I am, this book is a must. The photos alone tell the story of our largest state, its native inhabitants, and the role of the folks in the United States Coast Guard who keep the Alaskan waters open for shipping and who provide search and rescue operations. This is a photo history you'll want to open again and again. The photos and Capt. Hartman's narrative clearly show just how dangerous and unpredictable life can be in this beautiful part of the world.
This was a great read for me personally. I spent from Nov 1967 to Apr of 1969 on the Northwind WAGB 282. Did winter cruise north escorting a science vessel Alpha Helix thru the ice pack. Heading home we were diverted to the fishing grounds to do fishing patrol when USCGC Barataria had a boiler blow up. It delayed our return to Seattle by two or three weeks. But it was a different routine and fun. During the summer of 1968, did another cruise north attained my realm of the article circle status. Thanks Capt. Hartman for the memories.
This is an interesting book about the Arctic region of Alaska. Here is some of the interesting information that this book mentions: Concerning the Arctic: The U.S. has 8% of this pie. Russia has 44%. Canada is next with 23%. Denmark because of Greenland has 13%. Norway followed the U.S. at 7%. 5% is open water. The Alaska Arctic is a place most people will never see in their lifetimes. Barrow has 324 days of freezing temperatures every year. Sea ice is not stationary. It is blown by the wind and moved by currents. The Arctic region of Alaska is a place of great challenge for the 15,000 Alaskans who live above the Arctic Circle. During Nome's Gold Rush from 1899 to 1909, Nome had over 20,000 people at its peak. The population of Nome was only 3,620 people in the year 2010. Alaska is a state that is well-known for its scenic beauty.
