Review

"Sugar Land* by Tammy Lynne Stoner In 1923 rural Texas, 19-year-old Dara has fallen for her best friend Rhodie. In order to hide her forbidden love, she flees to a job as a cook at the Sugar Land Prison, where she befriends the incarcerated Blues singer Lead Belly and tries to stay in the closet by marrying the prison warden. “Dara's story is a postcard of small-town Texas life from Prohibition through civil rights, tracing the treatment and awareness of gay people through these decades. The love child of Fannie Flagg and Rita Mae Brown, Stoner is sure to win her own devoted following with this ravishing debut.” (Kirkus) Read the entire article here."...the story takes many delightful twists and turns, always described succinctly and colorfully by this narrator, who is irresistible even on days when she's "retaining enough water to grow rice in Arizona." By the end of it, she comes to believe "that each and every life has the number of trials it is destined to have, and if you take one away, another one fills its place….No life is easy and no life is hard; it's just what adjectives you choose to use to describe it." Dara's story is a postcard of small-town Texas life from Prohibition through civil rights, tracing the treatment and awareness of gay people through these decades. The love child of Fannie Flagg and Rita Mae Brown, Stoner is sure to win her own devoted following with this ravishing debut." ― STARRED Kirkus Reviewhttp://www.midwestbookreview.com/wbw/jan_19.htm#Fictionhttps://www.artsatl.org/tammy-lynne-stoners-debut-novel-looks-at-love-liberation-and-lead-belly-too/https://www.dallasvoice.com/sugar-high/Dara is a teenager in 1923 when she falls in love with her best friend, another girl, in their small town of Midland, Texas. Scared of what might happen, she takes a job at the Imperial State Prison Farm for men, where she meets the legendary Lead Belly, a real-life blues singer who eventually sings his way to freedom, and in the process, shows Dara how to achieve her own. A powerful paperback that doesn't pull any emotional punches, Sugar Land is a debut you don't want to miss. - Sadie Trobetta from BustleIt’s 1923 and 19-year-old Dara falls in love with her best friend, who happens to be a girl. To avoid a bleak, terrifying future in their small town, Dara takes a job in the kitchen at Imperial State Prison Farm for men. There she meets real-life blues singer Lead Belly, who sings his way to a pardon from the Governor―but only after he makes her promise to follow his lead. Life outside, however, isn’t all sweet tea and roses. After Dara’s ordinary domestic life falls apart and she gains so much weight she can barely wash herself, she is sent on a journey to accept the secret she’s been carrying. Along the way Dara reunites with her estranged step-daughters, buys a mobile home that she dubs the “Bland Old Opry,” and―to the chagrin of some in her small Texas town―falls in love with the local seamstress, a fellow widower and devotee of Bingo, Mrs. Tanya May Rogerton. Dara must break out of her own physical and emotional prison to become the fabulous matriarch to a family of Texas misfits. - Deep South Magazine“How can you not adore a novel about love, food, and how working in a prison can help you discover who you really are? Every page has a beating heart; every character is so alive, you swear you hear them breathing. Stoner is an original and this debut is just fantastic.” ―Caroline Leavitt, New York Times Bestselling author of Is This Tomorrow and Pictures of You "It's 1923 in Midland, Texas, and Nana Dara, newly employed by the Imperial State Prison Farm for men and newly awakened to a secret she'd rather lock up than face, has encountered the most unlikely of allies: Leadbelly. Yes, that Leadbelly. Out from this very particular pairing spools a Southern epic that spans decades. With beautiful peculiarity of detail and a perfect combination of sharpness and sensitivity, Tammy Lynne Stoner pens a gorgeous debut novel about race, class, sexuality, and the prisons we make of ourselves."―Gigi Little, Powell’s Book Seller and editor of City of Weird "With Sugar Land, Stoner creates a captivating story for the ages―a young, southern girl in the 1920's who becomes a ballsy broad in a double-wide, and on the journey learns about love the hard way. This heartbreaking and hysterical book inspires us with a brave and unusual life. Sugar Land is for anyone who still believes in love."―Jillian Lauren, New York Times bestselling author of Some Girls: My Life in a Harem and Everything You Ever Wanted "Much of what occurs in the novel is difficult to swallow, in great part because the story takes place in a time when Dara’s identity is not readily accepted, even by herself . . . Sugar Land is a raw, spiraling, and hopeful story about a woman who wishes that she didn’t love as she does, and the life she leads in the wake of her self-realizations." ―Hannah Hohman, Foreword Review "Stoner has written a book that is heartfelt and tender . . . These characters linger and are quite unforgettable. It’s very much a Southern book in language and with Stoner’s observations that are wry and thoughtful. Sugar Land spans decades in a well-told, easy going manner and I finished the book with a satisfied smile."―Sarah Leamy

Full disclosure - the author is a very dear childhood friend. Being a supporter of friends and all things women entrepreneur, I bought the book and read it to be supportive. And I LOVED it. No, really...I absolutely loved it. If I didn't love it, I would never take the time to write a review. I sit here now with a feeling of contentment having just finished this sweet, beautiful story and a little sad that it's over. Tammy's writing is extraordinary. She creates a vivid and clear picture of each character and scene. Example: "The warden, always a lover of the practical, shushed him. 'Ladies come in all shapes and sizes and deserve our respect, Ken.' When he said that, it made it somehow all right for me to sit with my legs uncrossed. It made it OK that I didn't carry a purse. It made it ok that makeup felt like a colorful lie on my face." And another favorite, highly relatable quote, "I left her room wondering how many people I would hurt because I cared what others thought." There are just too many examples of superb use of language to list here.I often fight books and plots, trying to figure out the ending. This one was in no way predictable, gratuitous, or forced. She builds scenarios and relationships that are believable but often surprising. If you are in the mood to curl up with a book that will leave you feeling like you just met a bunch of new friends, this is the one. Not only is it a great read but it would make a terrific book club selection.

A page turner that moved from heartwarming to heartbreaking and back again. Stoner tells an important story in an engaging and accessible way. The early time in the prison is eye-opening. The main character feels like the best friend you could always count on to tell you if those jeans really *did* make you look fat. I found myself rooting for her. The whole family is full of people so real I could imagine them at my thanksgiving table.. This is the first book in a long while where I felt I didn’t want it to end... fingers crossed for a sequel sequel.

Awesome vacation read! “.... and I realized that sometimes it’s the assumptions of something that can create it. You hear these awful things about yourself and someday you’ll more than likely become some of these things, if for no other reason than to prove you did something right”. Beautiful passage. But reminds me of how powerful words can be... the same can be true of speaking love and positivity. Congratulations Tammy Stoner on a beautiful piece of work.

It is 1923 Texas, and Dara realizes she has fallen in love with her best friend. The problem is that her best friend is a woman, and this is 1923, and it's Texas. Being publicly lesbian will lead to a very difficult life. They are treated as criminals and looked down upon. She doesn't want a life like that.So she takes a job at a prison for men, working in the kitchen. Since she likes women, Dara feels like this would be a safe place for her to basically hide out. She is terrified of being found out. Interestingly, her friend keeps writing her letters, and how she would go public with Dara and they could be happy. Dara eventually has the letters sent back. When Dara has been at the prison for ten years, the Warden suddenly proposes. She didn't see it coming, but she goes on to have a decent life with him. He is a good man and treats her well. Dara now has two stepdaughters. It was interesting how she always seemed to treat the one stepdaughter better than the other, maybe because she felt like she could understand the one stepdaughter better and relate to her more. I felt bad for the one daughter, Debbie, Dara always seems to be short with her.I liked this novel, it was something a little different. Reading how terrified Dara was when she realized she was a lesbian, and she honestly feared for her life. It's different from these days. How different would her life have been if she had been public with her friend, but she might not have lived long it was so dangerous.

I just finished this brilliant book and am now buying it as holiday gifts for several friends whom I know will enjoy it. It's one of those stories you fully immerse yourself in, giggle out loud while reading and don't want to end. Dara's world is 1920s Texas and, while it is interesting to journey back to a time and place so different in many ways, Stoner takes us through Dara's world, her mind and heart, in a way that is always intimate and honest. It's an unassumingly romantic read that, like its main character, doesn't fuss too much and keeps you laughing, crying or moving forward at just the right time. This is the most original novel I've read in a while. I loved it.

Tammy Lynn Stoner is a genius with serious talent. I really loved this book. The world building is tremendous. It was so easy to start reading and slip into that world. The book masterfully displays balance between what is so painful about being a social outcast, especially historically, and the hopefulness of Dara, the main character. Sugar Land documents the history and the pain of the past, and of course the pain of the present for so many people still, without bumming us out for all time. And I really felt like I knew the characters. So so good. This book will become part of the queer cannon.

Beautifully written. Sugar Land is the story of a Texas woman who attempts to sequester herself away from the world by going to work in a prison for men. It’s a heartbreaking start to a rich life of love and joy. There are so many great characters in this novel, and the setting is rich with historical detail and gritty Southern charm.

I really enjoyed this book! I was able to read it over Thanksgiving break and it was a nice change of pace from my relatives. I felt that the book was descriptive and painted an accurate picture of Texas. I would recommend this book to anyone coming to terms with their sexuality or anyone that just wants to enjoy a lovely story about coming-of-age!

The Sufi Path of Knowledge: Ibn al-Arabi's Metaphysics of Imagination, by William C. Chittick

Review

"For the first time in the history of Orientalism, a thorough study of Ibn al-'Arabi's thought is now available. William Chittick has given us a translation of numerous passages from the work of the Magister Magnus and placed them in their theological context, thus removing many misunderstandings that have prevailed both among Muslims and in the West when interpreting Ibn al-'Arabi's mystical worldview. Chittick has done this with admirable clarity, and his book will always remain a most important milestone in the study of Islamic mystical theology." -- Annemarie Schimmel, Harvard University

This book was a recommendation from another class.Without doubt, Ibn Al-Arabi is one of the greatest Muslimscholars. His path is authentic and full of well thought outexplanations. It sure is the next logical step for my understandingof the Great Source of Consciousness.

I am so glad I ordered this book. William C. Chittick is excellent in his interpretations and explanations of Ibn Al-Arabi's philosophical work. It has been an excellent but slow read for me as I digest the substance of Ibn Al-Arabi's work. I look forward to reading more of Ibn Al-Arabi's writings as I feel that he is one of the best Sufi Masters I have had the pleasure of studying...

I bought this book for a friend who had requested it. Book arrived in excellent condition.

Excellent source of knowledge of a very difficult but critical topic, one that is very useful for spirituality but also for philosophy and even physical sciences.

I am highly impressed with this book. The author has deep knowledge on the works of Ibn al-Arabi, Islam and Arabic. This book is invaluable for those who are interested in any aspect of the subject matter.

Superb exposition! Recommended for any student of Sufism and Islamic thought. Very clear, organized approach to this (Ibn al-'Arabi) master's metaphysics, which is incomparable.

Still reading before I pass this book on to one of Chittick's ex student. I have not much comment to make until I finish this book but it's a book you won't sit in front of the TV to multi task reading and watching. It's an exhilarating read so far. One must read with an open mind and be wowed.

In the Name of ALMIGHTY GOD,THE ONE, THE ABSOLUTE.By the Grace and Favour ofALMIGHTY GOD, THE ONE, THE ABSOLUTE,I am a Sufi Twelver Shia Schoolar, and I have the following to say about this book.By the Grace and Favour ofALMIGHTY GOD, THE ONE, THE ABSOLUTE, William Chittick is "a person with considerable Knowledge of Sufism". Unlike the Orientalists, who kwow nothing about Sufism though they pretend to know, Chittick's approach to Sufism can be considered as an Islamic approach to some extent. He knows what Sufi thought is and he presents his works on Sufism according to the Islamic perspective. This book is a must read for everyone who wants to be intruoduced to the thought of Ibn-e-Arabi.Exluding the Holy Prophets of God and the Greatest Muslim Saints , who are much higher than Ibn-e-Arabi, Ibn-e-Arabi is probably one of the greatest minds human civilization has produced in the last 2 thousand years!!Ibn-e-Arabi is not easy to be understood. Normaly, if you want to study Sufism, you need to be a student of a Muslim Sufi Master. Otherwise, you, with very rare exceptions, won't grasp the true meaning of Sufism.Chittick's book will introduce you to Ibn-e-Arabi but as I said above, if you want to dive into the depths of Ibn-e-Arabi's thought you will need a Muslim Sufi Master. Now, by the Grace and Favour ofALMIGHTY GOD, THE ONE, THE ABSOLUTE,I consider Ibn-e-Arabi to be a Muslim Saint. Not among the greatest Muslim Saints, but a Simple Muslim Saint. So, I strongly advise you that when you read the works attributed toIbn-e-Arabi, don't consider them to be "the Thought of Ibn-e-Arabi". Consider them "the Thought attributed to Ibn-e-Arabi".That's because, some of the books attributed toIbn-e-Arabi, contain heresies and blasphemys that are tottally against the Holy Quran, Islam's Holiest Book and the Source of all Islamic Knowledge. But because Ibn-e-Arabi is a Muslim Saint, he never said something against the Holy Quran. So, if you find anything in the works attributed to Ibn-e-Arabi that goes against the Holy Quran, then that was not written byIbn-e-Arabi, and is a forgery made by an ignorant person. If you find anything in the works attributed to Ibn-e-Arabi that matches the Holy Quran, then that was indeed said byIbn-e-Arabi and is true. The Fussus Al-Hikam, a book attributed toIbn-e-Arabi, with some exceptions, contains material that Islam considers Apostasy and Heresy. So you won't find any benefit in that book and it will confuse you.By the Grace and Favour ofALMIGHTY GOD, THE ONE, THE ABSOLUTE, here is something that was taught byIbn-e-Arabi and that match the Holy Quran:—The Concept of "WAHDATAL WUJUD", in English, "THE ONENESS OF BEING".Ignorant people falsely consider this to be Pantheism, or Panentheism or Monism!!But "WAHDATAL WUJUD" is pure Monotheism. It states that only GOD EXIST and only GOD IS PURE BEING, and everything else is non-existent. This does not deny the existence of the Cosmos and it's inhabitants (like the humans). "WAHDATAL WUJUD" means that GOD IS SO HIGH that:a) for HIM, it makes no difference if HIS creatures exist or not. GOD IS AS HE WAS before the Creation of the Cosmos;b) only GOD IS TOTTALY INDEPENDENT. HIS creatures are completely dependent on GOD;c) GOD AS HE IS, IS TOTTALLY UNKNOWABLE, and no creature knows HIM AS HE IS. We only know HIM AS HE SHOWED HIMSELF to us. We know HIM through HIS Names (such as The Incomparable, The Almighty, and so on) which are nothing in front of HIM, because HE TRANSCENDS INCOMPARABLY all HIS Names and all HIS creations;d) everything and everybody are absolutely nothing in front of GOD.—Everything in the Cosmos proves that:a) GOD EXISTS;b) GOD IS ONE. There is no deity except HIM;c) Everything and everybody are absolutely nothing in front of GOD;— ALMIGHTY GOD, THE ONE, THE ABSOLUTE, is neither body, nor spirit. HE IS THE CREATOR of body and spirit, and HE IS FAR ABOVE any concept of HIM, even the Lawful Concept of HIM presented in the Holy Scriptures;— ALMIGHTY GOD cannot be divided in parts. HE IS ABSOLUTE ONENESS;— The Perfect Man, in Arabic the "Insan Al-Kamil", though the greatest Creature of GOD, is just a slave of GOD, is absolutely nothing in front of GOD and contains nothing of the "HOLY BEING OF GOD".— the Perfect Man, though the greatest creature of GOD, still has to abide by the Holy Quran. There is a lot more to say about Ibn-e-Arabi, this fascinating personality, but by The Grace of GOD, I'll end here due to shortage of time. The reader will understand nothing of Sufism and other Islamic Sciences, unless he/she has a good Knowledge of the Holy Quran. So do read the Holy Quran and understand It's meanings. There is a very good translation of the Holy Quran in English called "The Study Quran", which was translated under the supervision of Sayyed Hussein Nasr and is available here at Amazon. This Copy of the Holy Quran has a long and very usefull commentary that will make you familiar with the Holy Book.Salutations to all.

I’ve used the Ruined Village Map Pack in a couple of scenarios now. I think it offers a nice array of detailed locations that all fit on the theme of an abandoned village. There’s a nice little cemetery (I’m surprised Paizo hasn’t made flip-mats for graveyards, considering how often adventurers go to them), a weed-choked fountain, and several houses and buildings of various sizes with broken furniture, cracked flooring, and debris everywhere. It’s definitely much more interesting and evocative than someone could draw with a marker. Most of the tiles could fit together to make one large village, with the exception being the two broken bridge spans crossing a river. I can envision a lot of uses for this Map Pack: a campsite the PCs come across just at sunset, an old hermit’s hut, a bandit hideout, a ghost-infested ruin, or even just an ordinary village that has fallen on (really) hard times. Its versatility and design quality makes it a solid product worth purchasing.

Great story. Love that it is about a real life situation. Very fast read. Seems as though it’s geared toward children though, which I did not realize. I feel this could have been a longer book for adults and gone into more detail. Very sad to find out Heather Lott Goodwin’s son passed away in an accident and there was a VERY small backpage vague write up of this. Instead of children’s illustrations; real life photos of the horse, family, and of Katrina situation would have been more relevant.I do also have to caution that the author however has somethings backwards and in correct in the horse world. There is a statement on page 38 “A Paint is a breed, a specific stock type horse that can only be registered if both parents are registered with the American Paint Horse association.” This is not entirely true. Paint horses can also be registered if they have an American Quarter Horse parent or parents and a Paint horse can also have a thoroughbred parent and be registered. They have to meet the color qualifications first. My reccomendation on this specific write up is don’t bother if you are looking to learn something about Paint horses. The author should have done a more through job of reaserching the subject before writing about it.This story seems to me the writer slapped together a short story and tried to pass it off as a book. I would love to see an adult version of this Horse and his family put into a book that someone takes the time to write out well. The story line is great and the happenings of hurricane Katrina are eye opening. This book was a waste of the $7.99 for 95 pages long and a lack of detail.

I wondered during Katrina, all the way out here in California, how in the heck people with livestock were managing such a catastrophic disaster, and this book answered my questions. It wasn't manageable on any level, and horrible things happened to people and horses. I couldn't put this book down, it grabbed me from the very beginning since our Hero Gunner had the same coltish bad boy personality as our three year old Morgan has now, including the one blue eye. (They aren't just for paint horses anymore!) I have also showed paints and pintos back in the day, so I related so much to the story of Gunner and his family. Gut wrenching story, and tears flowed--- An unforgetable story....

This is a fast easy read, not to mention a true story. We all knew of the destruction from Hurricane Katrina but never heard many of the stories about how it affected the animals. In this story the reader follows Gunner from the time he is brought to their home until he competes in a world championship. I grew up around horses and believe me, each has their own personality. I liked how she related the personality of Gunner.

I had the thrill of seeing Gunner in action and he really amazed me. The physical ability and awesome beauty of this horse was captivating. I never really even noticed his ears he was so good. This is a really good book and you get to know this wonderful horse better.

The story of Gunner and his owner was very touching. The author added funny, tragic, and heartwarming incidents. I loved it. I just wished that more details were not written about. It was very short.

As a resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast at the time of Hurricane Katrina and one who suffered the loss of our home, I was very interested in reading this story. I loved the horse, the family and the story. Though a sad and tragic ending, it was a good story full of redemption.

Great story for a pre-teen or early teenage. Would be good if reader were familiar with terminology dealing with horses and horse training facilities.

I got into a jag of reading real-life horse stories, and this book really scratched that itch. Gunner had a unique intelligence and personality that no other horse I'd read about exhibited. I especially loved that Gunner saved the owners son from a couple of dangerous situations, almost like Lassie. Fun read.
