Erik and Emily Orton and their 5 children, ages 6-16 (one with Downs Syndrome) have made a spur-of-the-moment decision to chuck work and life in New York and journey to the Caribbean. There, they obtain a sailboat and begin their one-year exploration of a new life adventure.The story takes the reader through all the trials of living together in tight quarters; learning to navigate the waters; and learning all the ins-and-outs of sailing itself. There are good time and not so good times. However, it is a life lesson for all.At first, I was a bit bored with all of the sailing terminology that didn't interest me at all. However, it got a bit better because my husband and I have taking cruises to the Caribbean and have even rented a sailboat and crew for a week to sail to different Caribbean islands. Glorious adventures!I can also understand the frustrations and the victories they faced. Dropping everything and taking on a whole new life is quite a challenge. My family and I did that twice when we all moved to Paris where my husband had been offered a job with NATO for a few years. For us, it was moving to a whole new country and learning a whole new language. There were huge challenges but also lots of wonderful memories. I’m sure the Orton family will all grow from this experience. It proves to us that we can do something different. It’s good to take us away from what we know and experience new things. Good for them.If you life to think what it would be like to take on a totally different life, do give this book a read. You might find that you are braver than you think. I thoroughly enjoyed traveling along with the Ortons on their family adventure! Erik, Emily and their five children decide to learn to sail and this leads eventually to the purchase of a catamaran they rename Fezywig and a 5,000 mile adventure lasting nearly a year. Not every couple, let alone a family this size, could stand so much closeness; this family not only survives intact but grows through the shared experience and trials and joys along the way. The reader is treated to the whole experience, both the highs and lows. The Ortons travel to some amazing places, but also get stuck waiting on boat repairs and weather and have to rethink their plans and expectations. Through this process, they all learn to slow down and take life as it comes. There is no sugarcoating here. Life on a boat can be dangerous, but without risk, there is no reward. Living the life of a cruiser is not for everyone, but this family inspires with their willingness to break out of the mold and try on a new lifestyle.Thank you to Shadow Mountain Publishing and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for my honest review.

I LOVED IT! Absolutely loved it. Ahoy! Erik and Emily Orton engagingly narrate the exploits of their family as they disrupt their conventional New York City life for an adventure at sea, unfazed by the challenges of five children, one with special needs. They can’t imagine everything that might go wrong, but it will anyway. They won’t persuade you to spend a year on a boat—at least, they didn’t persuade me—but they will seduce you into imagining boldly and envisioning setting sail on an adventure of your own. They will persuade you that ‘unconventional’ is a synonym for ‘individual’ and have you contemplating why you would accept an off-the-rack version of your life, when you can tailor-make your one. You’ll finish Seven at Sea daring to seek a discovery-driven voyage to your dream life, or the dream-of-a-lifetime. A fun, inspiring read.

If you are looking for a "how to cruise" book, this wouldn't be your first choice. However, If you want an honest look at a family taking on challenges together, and experiencing their ups and downs as they discover what life is like on a cruising sailboat, then this is a very good book.Life on a sailboat can be very rewarding, but those rewards can be hard won. Life in general is the same, and the Ortons take the risks to get those rewards. They are inspirational in a real way.An enjoyable read whether you have any intention òf living on a boat or not.

This book is so great! The voice of both of the authors, Erik and Emily Orton, were both amazing. I loved the way they both talk, giving the story of their family and adventures a complete feeling.The authors start this one out before they’ve even learned how to sail a boat. I loved the way that gives the reader the full story of what they did and why. The reader gets to follow these two and their family as they learn to sail, figure out what kind of boat they want, and deal with their adventures and misadventures at sea.This book includes maps and pictures. This gives the reader a way to form images in their mind. I loved being able to see where each of the sections took place and relate all of those things to the story.This one’s non-fiction. I can’t say I’ve ever wanted to live with our three kids on a boat on the ocean. But reading this book made me see that there can be so much more to life for a family then being in one central location. It’s something to think about!

Emily and Erik give you a front seat to a journey of love, life lessons and gratitude. Super fast read that is extremely well written.Thank you for sharing.

This is a lovely book! I defy anyone to start reading it and not want to head into the kitchen and cook!I really appreciate the thoroughness- it's got very thoughtful info on pretty much everything one can possibly do with masa, for instance... and I want to try ALL of them!I grew up in the Midwest, when and where taco "kits" were about as Mexican as we got- and this has opened my eyes so much! Highly recommended!

I love Rick Bayless and how he gives us access to authenticate recipes. Unfortunately the Kindle version needs improvement to easily access the contents. Only the Contents page is linked properly. The Searchable Terms page includes recipes and the page number but the "Go To" function only uses location references, not page number. Very frustrating. I'm still trying to get to the chilaquile recipe.

I gave this two stars because it';s well written and just a fun read.As far as being a cookbook, it sucks. The conversion from analog book to e-book is not complete. Where the recipes would reference a page number, and a proper e-book would have a link, there is nothing. I mean NOTHING. A recipe might say something like "prepare tortillas as " and that's it. Look in the index, find the proper recipe for the ingredient, then try to find your way back to the recipe you're preparing. Repeat.I'm getting really fed up e-books that are horribly proofed, or just not finished like this one. In fact, I think I'll change my rating to 2 stars.

If you're going to put a book on Kindle, then do it right. Have a list of recipes that open up under each chapter heading, with hotlinks to take you directly to the recipe. Or at least put hotlinks in the index, so you can go straight there. Why should I, the customer, have to find a likely sounding recipe, put a relevant word into a search field, and then poke through the options until I find the one I want? If the publishers cannot be bothered to make the book user friendly, they are not getting my money. I returned the book for a refund after a quick review.

This book and Diane Kennedy's "The Cuisines of Mexico" are the standards for all encompassing authentic mexican cookbooks. You won't go wrong with either. I would say this cookbook is a little more easily adapted to western markets, but besides that they are very similar. I have owned this cookbook for about 20 years and it has always been a favorite. If you want to make real mexican food at home buy this book. Bayless has some other good cookbooks too, but they are more focused on the fusion cuisine he serves in his restaurant in my opinion but they are still good to have in your collection. This one is the real deal. I've been a chef for over 20 years and lived within 2 hours of Mexico most of my life if that helps substantiate my opinion.

This was the first Mexican cookbook I owned, and it's still among the best. (The hardcover has split in two and many pages are stained with mole and other Mexican sauces; I recently purchased the Kindle edition as a backup/replacement.) The writing is clear and detailed, with many technical tips and recipe variants. I have not made every recipe in the book, but of the many I have made, only one of the red enchilada recipes was a clinker, more than made up for by the excellent green enchiladas. One warning to a prospective buyer: These recipes are, for the most part, labor-intensive. Most are geared to special occasions or large gatherings rather than simple, quickly created suppers.

I love Rick Bayless series of authentic Mexican food cookbooks, I have several of them and like them all. This was my first e-cookbook and at first I was skeptical of being able to use it while cooking but the kindle's bookmark feature and the easy to clean screen made it easier and cleaner to use than a traditional paper cookbook. The author's enthusiasm for great regional mexican food shows in his books and the recipes i've tried have all turned out well. I like how his books aren't just cookbooks but also talk about the region the food is from and some of his personal life as well.

i really wanted to like this cookbook. but the formatting is so aggravating that i have to lower the rating considerably. there are WAAAAY too many sidebars, marginal notes, etc. to keep up with trying to make any single recipe. one has to keep referring ahead, behind, and to the side just to reasonably view any recipe.i'm sure the information therein is quite good, but it's thrown all over the place. not rick bayliss' fault -- it's the fault of the editor. sorry, try again.

We've made 6-7 recipes from the book and they have turned out really well. I like the pointers and alternatives he gives in the notes next to the recipes. Difficulty ranges from quick and easy to multi-day preparations.

Having lived and helped others live in high-risk areas, I thought this would have been very helpful to us as we were going through difficult decisions concerning what risk to take. I highly recommend for those who live in risk, or have friends, family, or co-workers who do.

Poorly crafted and edited. Author uses word “risk” in ways that force the reader who has experienced living in dangerous cross-cultural settings to translate key statements - risk assessment is never used to identify key warning signs of an impending crisis event. No mention of the importance of understanding how soft and hard targets change risk level. Minimal discussion of defining trigger points for response actions. Concepts for developing faith to confront dangerous situations based significantly on 20th century Jewish philosopher thought. Nothing here about developing a field crisis response team and how it would function. In a crisis, the leader should focus on his relationship with God, clearly demonstrating and practicing the character of Jesus Christ and the fruit of the Holy Spirit. Crisis mode is not a call or justification to become directive in relationships with the team.A book like this needs to work effectively both now and in a Biblical setting. Does what it teaches reflect how Paul, Jeremiah, or Elisha would have responded in a dangerous situation? Yes, sometimes God calls us to experience a dreadful crisis, but what about all of the times when he gives us warning signs that we ignore, and then we needlessly suffer the consequences of our lack of planning and inattention?Look for a book that takes you through the warning signs of avoiding danger. Look for a book that tells you how to mitigate the impact of a crisis once it has begun. Long-term ministry depends on listening to God, at times retreating and regrouping, and taking advantage of the resources He gives us. “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”

Wiley, or the author, has continued to cheapen the quality of the paper they use and it really bothers me. There was something off-putting about the writing style. However, at around 40 pages, I connected with the rhythm of the book and genuinely felt drawn into the story. Demian Vitanza manages to provide perspective without justification—a feat all the more impressive for him having written the book in first person.I strongly recommend this for anyone who has every wondered at the mindset of seemingly ordinary young Muslim men who leave secure nations to join extremist groups in war-torn countries.I received a complimentary copy of this book via a Goodreads giveaway. As intense as his book is, you cannot help but empathize with Tariq. He's an outsider even before he can speak himself into existence and the challenges he faces are nothing compared to the consequences he faces.It's well written and there's this brutal honesty that oozes from Tariq. It took me a few chapters to get into the book. I am still not sure how I feel about the interview format where the interviewers questions are not written.I do think it’s from a viewpoint that is rarely discussed which makes it worth the read. The entire time I kept thinking and hoping he’d make the right decision. He doesn’t seem to, except in the end. But anyone who has been young and full of passion for anything can identify with his feelings. Although, I kept wishing he’d focus his passions on something other than religion. He’s almost there in the end and I finished the book believing he’d eventually make it there.

Michael Crichton's Eaters of the Dead tells the story of Beowulf as seen from an Arab diplomat, Ibn Fadlan. In some ways, it is about a meeting of two very different cultures. Ibn Fadlam, a devout Muslim, is both fascinated and appalled by the customs of the Vikings, who have sex in public, engage in human sacrifice, fear nothing (or so it originally appeared), have a fondness for strong drink, and don't bathe regularly. There are sections I remember from reading the book over 30 years ago, such as when the Vikings use onion soup to discern whether an abdominal wound is fatal: If they can smell the onion near the wound, then it is considered fatal. In another section, Ibn Fadlan is afraid of being lowered down a cliff on a rope. They tell him: The only way to fall is to let go of the rope, and only a fool would let go of the rope--and you are not a fool. As he does in other science fiction novels, like Andromeda Strain, Crichton blends the truth with fiction: Ibn Fadlan was a real person, and the books alludes to some of his actual travels and writing. The book also inspired a movie called "The Thirteenth Warrior."

From the beginning, 'Eaters of the Dead' unapologetically mirrors the epic poem, 'Beowulf' and its film adaptations. Fortunately, Crichton's story also has a movie: 'The Thirteenth Warrior' strengths the book with perfect casting, atmospheric terror, and complex cross-cultural relationships. The book doesn't measure up to the writer's other works, say 'Jurassic Park', in excitement and suspense. Yet, Antonio Banderas as Ahmed Ibn Fahdian and Vladimir Kulich as Buliwuf - and the horde of menacing creatures who come through the mist - make the movie an essential, enriching addendum to the novel.

I was thrilled to see this book in print once more. My copy has been read, shared, and read again; it's worn so I snapped up a second copy. Don't miss your chance to own it. This book is based upon surviving fragments of Ibn Fadlan's journal written while he lived among the Northmen--Vikings, often thought to be barbaric, quite primitive, all brawn with small brains. A fine professor translated the fragments of Fadlan's journal, and Crichton learned of them while studying in college. He turned the translated fragments into a novel that tells of the unrepentant warrior nature of these men, but also tells of their courage, brotherhood, and loyalty. They were more than bullies and bruisers. Read Crichton's foreword and afterword, but above all, enjoy the story of Buliwyf, a mirror image of Beowulf, the English epic poem read in most high schools year after year after year. The book is a good action tale, and it's a lesson in another pocket of the Western world.

I'm normally a great fan of Crichton, but I didn't care too much for this story. I was simply unable to develop much attachment for the narrator, and a plot that should have been electric wound up feeling kind of like a newspaper article. The problem is not with Crichton's story-craft; it is with the man telling the story. I think Crichton did exactly what he intended to because it really felt like it was composed by somebody else. I'll give him points for the plot, characters, and word use. I just found this creation too dry for the material that it was covering.

I cannot believe this little gem inspired the 13th Warrior! What a FANTASTIC book and worth reading. Based upon numerous historical documents from throughout the ancient world. A job well done by the late Crichton wading through the mire of scholarly debacle concerning the witness of Norse culture during this time period through the eyes of a Muslim.

Written from a tremendously unique perspective, I feared the book would be dry and uninteresting. Not so. The story captured me by the 2nd page, and held my attention as few ever do.

Several months ago one of my cyber-friends wrote a review on "The 13th Warrior" and invited me to see the movie. After reading the book it was based on, Michel Crichton's "Eaters of The Dead," I watched the movie.The movie was a financial disaster, losing over 100 million at the box office; I enjoyed both the movie and the book.For the most part, the movie stuck to the text; however, as always, I would recommend reading the novel first. While Crichton markets the book as fiction, it is based on the 300 year old translations of, Ahmad Ibn Fadlan's 921 A.D. eyewitness account of his travels from Bagdad to Russia and contact with the Vikings.As a result of a dare, Crichton's set out to prove that epic poem, "Beowulf" was based on actual events. The plan was to strip away fiction from fact to get to the bottom of it. Realizing that had been exposed to Ibn Fadlan's documentation of Viking life and culture. Accordingly, he put together this scholarly yet interesting story from Ibn's viewpoint.On an emissary mission assigned him by a Muslim ruler of Bagdad, Ibn came upon a group of Warrior Vikings who king had passed away. While at their camp, a Nobel messenger from King Hrothgar relayed that the King was under attack from a beastly tribe of mist demons. A soothsayer (angel of death) set in motion the selection of 12 Viking Warriors and a foreigner as the rescuers. Conscripted, Ibn reluctantly joined the 12 Warriors, led by Buliwyf to do battle with the mysterious "Mist Monsters" against all odds in an attempt to save the Kingdom.While the movie, stars Antonio Banderas, who plays the part of Ibn Fadlan and Vladimir Kulich as Buliwyf and Omar Sharif with a small part as Melchisidek, Ibn's interpreter, I recommend that you read this short, 186-page action adventure prior to watching the movie.Enjoy!
