I don't understand all the hype about this book. Rachel Hollis's life experience is so near perfect and so far removed from that of the average woman, that there is almost nothing in this book that is actually relatable. She uses the following examples in her book:1. She dropped out of school at 19 to pursue her successful event planning business that catered to Hollywood celebrities.2. She had one intimate relationship outside of marriage. They broke up for two days. On the third day he professed his love and they ended up getting married.3. Although they have four children, she and her husband struggled with infertility for eight months.4. Hollis admits she has a mean streak and uses the example of making fun of a girl in high school for shaving her toes.5. Hollis also shares in the book that she peed her pants on a trampoline and had a cavity at one point.6. Almost every chapter talks about how she made the Forbes "Top 40 Under 40 list", runs her own multi-million dollar company, and is a "good Christian girl".Perhaps this book could be appreciated by women who have lived a very blessed and sheltered life. But for anyone who has ever had to deal with real life issues such as poverty, illness, abuse, depression, co-dependency, dysfunctional families, loneliness, etc. I recommend you look elsewhere because this book will come across as one long never-ending humblebrag. All eight women in my book club agreed that the book had a tone that was "inauthentic", "judgmental", and "preachy". If you want to read truly authentic, genuine work that sheds light on overcoming human imperfections and failings, I recommend reading Jeanette Walls, Cheryl Strayed, and Elizabeth Gilbert. These female authors have lived very imperfect lives - like most of us - and you will find their work far more relatable than this book which comes across as self-aggrandizing propaganda. I ended up returning the book for a full refund, which I never do.Note: My original one-star review of the book (which 93 people found helpful in the first 3 days) was reported to Amazon and removed for not meeting "community standards" even though the tone was very respectful. I'm sharing this because it might help explain all the five-star reviews.

I've been following Rachel Hollis for years. Up until now, her message has resonated with me. As a lifestyle blogger, she produced great content, but her recent evolution into a self-proclaimed "mogul," has bothered me for the last year. Unfortunately, "Girl Wash Your Face" is "Mogul Rachel" instead of her previous, likable self.Here are my issues with the book:1. The fake "hey ya'll" language.Hollis may have (VERY) recently moved to Austin, Texas (where I also live), but don't be fooled by her plastered-on attempts at sounding "down home." She is simply emulating greater, authentic Texas writers such as Jen Hatmaker and Brene Brown. She grew up in Southern California and most recently lived in Glendale.Texans have a phrase: "Don't California My Texas." This applies to written work, too.2. The non-stop humble-bragging.We get it, Rachel, you are productive and work hard. Guess what - you also have a full-time nanny, full-time housekeeper, and an ACTUAL mogul of a husband to bankroll your PR expenditures, new staff hires, and property purchases. If your readers could afford to "run a company" and also not take a salary for 6+ years (while still having weekly mani/pedis, daily blowouts, etc.) I'm sure we all could be a "mogul" in our own way.3. The dangerous, non-expert advice.Hollis does not have a formal degree or certification of any kind, beyond a high school diploma. She is 100% unqualified to give advice in the areas of physical and mental health, relationships, trauma/recovery, and life management. Marrying the only guy you've ever dated and having kids doesn't make you a relationship expert. It makes you a wife and mother. Losing weight and exercising doesn't making you a trainer or nutritionist. It makes you a person who has eaten well and exercised to better health. And experiencing trauma and having a therapist does NOT make you a mental health professional. It makes you someone who has worked through their own issues.4. The strategic "Christian-ish" positioning. This book is categorized under the "Christian Books" section on Amazon and similar retailers. This is a tactic by the author and publisher to rank higher and make the NYT's best-seller list. Those who have read the book have already noted the lack of actual Christian content. I mean, Rachel doesn't even thank God in the acknowledgements section! She does thank her nanny, though.5. The unoriginal, co-opted thoughts. Anyone who has read ANY of the following authors will see their content co-opted (and unattributed) throughout this entire book: Tony Robbins, Oprah, Elizabeth Gilbert, Jen Hatmaker, Brene Brown.I could go on, but I think I've made my point. I'll sum up my thoughts on this book in two words: derivative drivel.

My goodness I was sucked in due to the hype of this book. OMG, NO. Rachel is so entitled and preachy and comes across as exactly the kind of person I detest. Everything in the book was "me me me!!!" and offered no insight to real problems. This book made me irrationally angry, which I think is the exact opposite of what it was intended to do.

Like so many other reviewers, I wanted to love it... So many of my friends have nothing but praises for the book, so I bought it.I’ve been disappointed from the start. I ended up feeling so annoyed that I wasn’t able to finish the book.I felt like it was too much “me me me” and humble bragging, as another reviewer pointed out.

I was basically disappointed in this book, which BTW should be a booklet. It is only 32 pages. The only decent picture is on the cover. The other pictures (in the kindle edition) are small and terrible. You can't tell much of anything by the pictures. The text refers to pictures on page 23, let's say, but the pages are not numbered. And I'm not sure all the pictures made the book. ?? Some of the descriptions are in great detail, but the years of production are usually absent. Some are listed as "older". Older than what? Having been written by someone who is an "expert" onJumbo peanut butter jars, it leaves something to be desired.

Good information about the various styles of jars, but not a detailed history that would allow you to date them.Also too much information about the author included in the book. Didn't want to know the life history of the author, just the jars.

I am a really big "thrifter". I have come across a few of these kinds of jars before, but passed them by. Big mistake! I now know what to do when I find the jars again.

I had a PSA test a few years ago and when results showed a high PSA. I agree to a biopsy. It was very painful and I was peeing blood for a week and blood in my semen for 2 weeks. It showed no signs of cancer. A year later my doctor did another PSA test (I didn't know they do a PSA test every year when a man reaches a certain age) and wanted to perform another biopsy. I started researching PSA tests and immediately found Dr Ablin, the respected Pathologist who discovered the Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA). He explains that it only indicated that you have a prostate (hence the term Prostate specific not cancer specific. In the chapter "the color of money" he explains how they got FDA approval and how it Is a multi-billion dollar industry.

I highly recommend this book. We need to be proactive in taking care of our health. I purchased this book two weeks before I was due to under a biopsy on my pancreas. It all started after my doctor informed that my PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) was very elevated and that I needed to make an appointment with a Urologist. Following the doctor's orders, I did just that. The Urologist agreed with what the doctor had found, a highly elevated PSA. As a result he recommend that a biopsy be performed, to determine if I have cancer. I said, "Okay." Two weeks before the scheduled procedure, I contacted the Urologist's office to find out what all I needed to do, and what could I expect at the procedure. Needless to say, after being given instructions, and what to expect afterwards, especially the part of the multiple incisions, and the duration (possibly months) of bleeding, I decided to (Thank God!) search out more information. That's when I purchased and downloaded this book. After I started reading it, I knew that there was no way that I was going to under a biopsy on my pancreas. Absolutely Not! All I can say is, WHEW! CLOSE CALL! Sorry for those who've never got to read this book or any such book like it, before they took the plunge. Do yourself a favor...get the book. And women, if your husband or boyfriend won't, then do it for them. Enlighten yourself, that you can enlighten them. It is said that, "What you don't know can't hurt you." Well, I certainly beg to differ, because it truly can. After reading this book, I am certain that you will agree with me. And the man who benefits will be so ever grateful.

After reading this excellent book, I now wonder three years after completing prostate cancer treatment and being cancer free with minimal side effects, if I really needed treatment. When I was diagnosed with prostate cancer my background as a psychologist with an interest in research led me to reviewing the literature on prostate cancer. I became aware of the risks of severe side effects inherent in most prostate cancer treatments and the dangers of the profit driven prostate cancer industry. I then selected the treatment I believe has the least risk of side effects, proton therapy. I discovered that most of the men going through this treatment with me also invested a great deal of time and effort reviewing this same literature. Unfortunately, most men don't seek such knowledge and instead make the understandable mistake of trusting the physician, almost always a urologist, who diagnosed their prostate cancer and then recommends treatment. A very real danger exists when the livelihood of this physician is based on patients agreeing to the treatment he or she is recommending and then providing. Dr. Richard Ablin has clearly achieved his stated goal for writing this book of “...exposing the abuse of power and profit over patient ethos” as the prostate cancer industry incorrectly uses the PSA to scare men into treatment. Men should not automatically agree to the use of the PSA to aid in diagnosing prostate cancer. They should instead get a second opinion from their internist or medical oncologist. Men diagnosed with prostate cancer should consider watchful waiting and also do their research on the side effects of different treatments. Love the recipes, format, and fun. The recipes are all vegetarian but plenty of suggestions on adding meat. Like the guide to making each recipe your own.

Looked for it, found it

Funny, informative, funny, delicious recipes, informative, funny.....Good ideas and tips throughout...I did not know that an emergency chocolate stash was so important, or that elevation gain induces farts....lol. I love the little rants on slowing down and taking your time to enjoy things, the benefits of bringing along junk food, and how clean is clean enough... The recipes look solid, many of them are make at home, finish on trail. They also rely a lot on a frying pan....something i have never taken with me backpacking, but now am considering as a useful tool. I highly recommend this cookbook, The authors teach you a lot about creating ATTIE...A Thing That Is Edible.

No campfire or grilling or Dutch oven recipes here! Firstly, let me say how happy I am that there is an anti-Dutch oven screed in this book. Once I went on a camping trip with a guy who brought a Dutch oven and it was a nightmare. He dumped coals everywhere we went. It was a huge ordeal for something that was really just a freakin pot. Anyway, none of that. The book divides recipes into day trips and overnight trips, but really what you need to know is that there are recipes for you to cook at home before you leave on your trip, and there are some to cook during your trip. The home recipes are mostly energy bars and breads and such. The camp stove recipes include a delicious-looking simple pad Thai, veggie stir-fry, some cookies and breads to fry up in the pan, and lots of oatmeal and couscous recipes. And chocolate and camp coffee! This book seems most useful for adults doing a backpacking trip or car camping with friends and wanting to get beyond hot dogs and eggs. I would definitely want to try some of these recipes on my car camping trips with my kids. The photography is beautiful and makes me want to get outside and chow down. And drink coffee.Thanks to Netgalley and Rowman & Littlefield Press for providing a copy. My thoughts are my own.

Best Served Wild by Brendan Leonard and Anna Brones is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early August.Recipes for snacks, drinks, standard rib-sticking camp fare (i.e. oatmeal, chili), and some fancier items (like couscous and paninis) are presented with idyllic mountain camping photos and not a speck of mud, ash, bug, fish scale, or other debris in sight.

I received this book at the Outdoor Retailer Convention and LOVE it. It's beautifully written with great photos and recipes. It inspired me to take real food with me on a 7-day hike I'm about to go on, but still be able to carry it all. Thank you for this book!
