This is an excellent aid to any Christian's spiritual growth by helping one to identify his or her dominant "spiritual temperament". The underlying principle is that people relate to God in varied ways and so a one-size-fits-all spirtuality will not do. Too often churches try to force believers into a particular mould of spirtuality (e.g. by defining quiet-time in very rigid ways) or are intolerant to varying expressions of devotion. This book serves as a much needed remedy by broadening our horizons to the many sacred pathways tread by godly men and women of the Bible and throughout church history. The author identifies nine main spiritual temperaments: naturalist, sensate, traditionalist, ascetic, activist, caregiver, enthusiast, contemplative, intellectual. Readers are not only introduced to these temperaments but also guided to point-score their affinity to each in order to discover the overall, composite profile of their soul's path to God by the end of the book. This would make especially helpful reading for pastors and church leaders, or anyone playing a guiding role to fellow believers in their spiritual lives.
What I mean by the title is that this book helps you find ways to better connect to God, but there is a danger in the spiritual temperaments becoming a way to justify not partaking in a course of action. Furthermore, this book could have benefitted by discussing the significance of prayer as a spiritual discipline rather than briefly describing prayer in the context of a handful of temperaments.
After reading this book, you will have a better understanding of why people are the way they, or why they act a certain way. People's difference will not be strange to you anymore, but you will begin to respect them as they are. For instance, if you are in a Church gathering, and you see a person standing still, or not acting as expected in such gathering, you won't think it strange, but you would understand they have a different personality style of worship. i feel like I have just blabbed on (lol). pick up the book and read for yourself, you never know, you might just learn a thing or two about how you worship God based on your personality.
This is an excellent book that our Sunday School class used as a study for several weeks. It is well written, thought provoking and makes for a good discussion. It challenges to evaluate the various ways we can feel close to God. Some through nature, for example, while others prefer a more traditional pathway. Great book! We learned a lot!
Though I shy away from books that label people in groups, I got some good insights from the spiritual paths. I found there were several paths that appeal to me: naturalist, ascetic, contemplative. I also learned not to expect all seekers/believers to follow the same path I follow. On the back cover is the quote: "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's spiritual path," which cracked me up at first and has lingered in my mind ever since. I gave it one less star for a faulty description of what it means to be a contemplative and for letting the author's intellectual bias come through a bit too much. A worthwhile read for a church-group study.
It has always interested me how different people seemingly connect with God. As a pastor, there are always groups and connect through music while others connect through study while others connect through symbols. Gary Thomas does a great job at explaining these differences and warning signs for each of them.
This is a good read and it helps give form and thought to something that we tend to not think about that much. How we personally connect to God on a deeper level is important. Understanding that connection and being able to address it can help us go even deeper in our relationship with God.
Spiritual formation is often seen to occur within a few limited formats (study of scripture and prayer). Thomas illustrates that there are multiple formats which are theologically and biblically legitimate. His reflections were sound and broadening. It allows for for diversity and creativity in the way God chooses to connect with humans.The book is well written and engaging.
