The Sufi Path of Knowledge: Ibn al-Arabi's Metaphysics of Imagination, by William C. Chittick

Review

"For the first time in the history of Orientalism, a thorough study of Ibn al-'Arabi's thought is now available. William Chittick has given us a translation of numerous passages from the work of the Magister Magnus and placed them in their theological context, thus removing many misunderstandings that have prevailed both among Muslims and in the West when interpreting Ibn al-'Arabi's mystical worldview. Chittick has done this with admirable clarity, and his book will always remain a most important milestone in the study of Islamic mystical theology." -- Annemarie Schimmel, Harvard University

This book was a recommendation from another class.Without doubt, Ibn Al-Arabi is one of the greatest Muslimscholars. His path is authentic and full of well thought outexplanations. It sure is the next logical step for my understandingof the Great Source of Consciousness.

I am so glad I ordered this book. William C. Chittick is excellent in his interpretations and explanations of Ibn Al-Arabi's philosophical work. It has been an excellent but slow read for me as I digest the substance of Ibn Al-Arabi's work. I look forward to reading more of Ibn Al-Arabi's writings as I feel that he is one of the best Sufi Masters I have had the pleasure of studying...

I bought this book for a friend who had requested it. Book arrived in excellent condition.

Excellent source of knowledge of a very difficult but critical topic, one that is very useful for spirituality but also for philosophy and even physical sciences.

I am highly impressed with this book. The author has deep knowledge on the works of Ibn al-Arabi, Islam and Arabic. This book is invaluable for those who are interested in any aspect of the subject matter.

Superb exposition! Recommended for any student of Sufism and Islamic thought. Very clear, organized approach to this (Ibn al-'Arabi) master's metaphysics, which is incomparable.

Still reading before I pass this book on to one of Chittick's ex student. I have not much comment to make until I finish this book but it's a book you won't sit in front of the TV to multi task reading and watching. It's an exhilarating read so far. One must read with an open mind and be wowed.

In the Name of ALMIGHTY GOD,THE ONE, THE ABSOLUTE.By the Grace and Favour ofALMIGHTY GOD, THE ONE, THE ABSOLUTE,I am a Sufi Twelver Shia Schoolar, and I have the following to say about this book.By the Grace and Favour ofALMIGHTY GOD, THE ONE, THE ABSOLUTE, William Chittick is "a person with considerable Knowledge of Sufism". Unlike the Orientalists, who kwow nothing about Sufism though they pretend to know, Chittick's approach to Sufism can be considered as an Islamic approach to some extent. He knows what Sufi thought is and he presents his works on Sufism according to the Islamic perspective. This book is a must read for everyone who wants to be intruoduced to the thought of Ibn-e-Arabi.Exluding the Holy Prophets of God and the Greatest Muslim Saints , who are much higher than Ibn-e-Arabi, Ibn-e-Arabi is probably one of the greatest minds human civilization has produced in the last 2 thousand years!!Ibn-e-Arabi is not easy to be understood. Normaly, if you want to study Sufism, you need to be a student of a Muslim Sufi Master. Otherwise, you, with very rare exceptions, won't grasp the true meaning of Sufism.Chittick's book will introduce you to Ibn-e-Arabi but as I said above, if you want to dive into the depths of Ibn-e-Arabi's thought you will need a Muslim Sufi Master. Now, by the Grace and Favour ofALMIGHTY GOD, THE ONE, THE ABSOLUTE,I consider Ibn-e-Arabi to be a Muslim Saint. Not among the greatest Muslim Saints, but a Simple Muslim Saint. So, I strongly advise you that when you read the works attributed toIbn-e-Arabi, don't consider them to be "the Thought of Ibn-e-Arabi". Consider them "the Thought attributed to Ibn-e-Arabi".That's because, some of the books attributed toIbn-e-Arabi, contain heresies and blasphemys that are tottally against the Holy Quran, Islam's Holiest Book and the Source of all Islamic Knowledge. But because Ibn-e-Arabi is a Muslim Saint, he never said something against the Holy Quran. So, if you find anything in the works attributed to Ibn-e-Arabi that goes against the Holy Quran, then that was not written byIbn-e-Arabi, and is a forgery made by an ignorant person. If you find anything in the works attributed to Ibn-e-Arabi that matches the Holy Quran, then that was indeed said byIbn-e-Arabi and is true. The Fussus Al-Hikam, a book attributed toIbn-e-Arabi, with some exceptions, contains material that Islam considers Apostasy and Heresy. So you won't find any benefit in that book and it will confuse you.By the Grace and Favour ofALMIGHTY GOD, THE ONE, THE ABSOLUTE, here is something that was taught byIbn-e-Arabi and that match the Holy Quran:—The Concept of "WAHDATAL WUJUD", in English, "THE ONENESS OF BEING".Ignorant people falsely consider this to be Pantheism, or Panentheism or Monism!!But "WAHDATAL WUJUD" is pure Monotheism. It states that only GOD EXIST and only GOD IS PURE BEING, and everything else is non-existent. This does not deny the existence of the Cosmos and it's inhabitants (like the humans). "WAHDATAL WUJUD" means that GOD IS SO HIGH that:a) for HIM, it makes no difference if HIS creatures exist or not. GOD IS AS HE WAS before the Creation of the Cosmos;b) only GOD IS TOTTALY INDEPENDENT. HIS creatures are completely dependent on GOD;c) GOD AS HE IS, IS TOTTALLY UNKNOWABLE, and no creature knows HIM AS HE IS. We only know HIM AS HE SHOWED HIMSELF to us. We know HIM through HIS Names (such as The Incomparable, The Almighty, and so on) which are nothing in front of HIM, because HE TRANSCENDS INCOMPARABLY all HIS Names and all HIS creations;d) everything and everybody are absolutely nothing in front of GOD.—Everything in the Cosmos proves that:a) GOD EXISTS;b) GOD IS ONE. There is no deity except HIM;c) Everything and everybody are absolutely nothing in front of GOD;— ALMIGHTY GOD, THE ONE, THE ABSOLUTE, is neither body, nor spirit. HE IS THE CREATOR of body and spirit, and HE IS FAR ABOVE any concept of HIM, even the Lawful Concept of HIM presented in the Holy Scriptures;— ALMIGHTY GOD cannot be divided in parts. HE IS ABSOLUTE ONENESS;— The Perfect Man, in Arabic the "Insan Al-Kamil", though the greatest Creature of GOD, is just a slave of GOD, is absolutely nothing in front of GOD and contains nothing of the "HOLY BEING OF GOD".— the Perfect Man, though the greatest creature of GOD, still has to abide by the Holy Quran. There is a lot more to say about Ibn-e-Arabi, this fascinating personality, but by The Grace of GOD, I'll end here due to shortage of time. The reader will understand nothing of Sufism and other Islamic Sciences, unless he/she has a good Knowledge of the Holy Quran. So do read the Holy Quran and understand It's meanings. There is a very good translation of the Holy Quran in English called "The Study Quran", which was translated under the supervision of Sayyed Hussein Nasr and is available here at Amazon. This Copy of the Holy Quran has a long and very usefull commentary that will make you familiar with the Holy Book.Salutations to all.

I’ve used the Ruined Village Map Pack in a couple of scenarios now. I think it offers a nice array of detailed locations that all fit on the theme of an abandoned village. There’s a nice little cemetery (I’m surprised Paizo hasn’t made flip-mats for graveyards, considering how often adventurers go to them), a weed-choked fountain, and several houses and buildings of various sizes with broken furniture, cracked flooring, and debris everywhere. It’s definitely much more interesting and evocative than someone could draw with a marker. Most of the tiles could fit together to make one large village, with the exception being the two broken bridge spans crossing a river. I can envision a lot of uses for this Map Pack: a campsite the PCs come across just at sunset, an old hermit’s hut, a bandit hideout, a ghost-infested ruin, or even just an ordinary village that has fallen on (really) hard times. Its versatility and design quality makes it a solid product worth purchasing.

Great story. Love that it is about a real life situation. Very fast read. Seems as though it’s geared toward children though, which I did not realize. I feel this could have been a longer book for adults and gone into more detail. Very sad to find out Heather Lott Goodwin’s son passed away in an accident and there was a VERY small backpage vague write up of this. Instead of children’s illustrations; real life photos of the horse, family, and of Katrina situation would have been more relevant.I do also have to caution that the author however has somethings backwards and in correct in the horse world. There is a statement on page 38 “A Paint is a breed, a specific stock type horse that can only be registered if both parents are registered with the American Paint Horse association.” This is not entirely true. Paint horses can also be registered if they have an American Quarter Horse parent or parents and a Paint horse can also have a thoroughbred parent and be registered. They have to meet the color qualifications first. My reccomendation on this specific write up is don’t bother if you are looking to learn something about Paint horses. The author should have done a more through job of reaserching the subject before writing about it.This story seems to me the writer slapped together a short story and tried to pass it off as a book. I would love to see an adult version of this Horse and his family put into a book that someone takes the time to write out well. The story line is great and the happenings of hurricane Katrina are eye opening. This book was a waste of the $7.99 for 95 pages long and a lack of detail.

I wondered during Katrina, all the way out here in California, how in the heck people with livestock were managing such a catastrophic disaster, and this book answered my questions. It wasn't manageable on any level, and horrible things happened to people and horses. I couldn't put this book down, it grabbed me from the very beginning since our Hero Gunner had the same coltish bad boy personality as our three year old Morgan has now, including the one blue eye. (They aren't just for paint horses anymore!) I have also showed paints and pintos back in the day, so I related so much to the story of Gunner and his family. Gut wrenching story, and tears flowed--- An unforgetable story....

This is a fast easy read, not to mention a true story. We all knew of the destruction from Hurricane Katrina but never heard many of the stories about how it affected the animals. In this story the reader follows Gunner from the time he is brought to their home until he competes in a world championship. I grew up around horses and believe me, each has their own personality. I liked how she related the personality of Gunner.

I had the thrill of seeing Gunner in action and he really amazed me. The physical ability and awesome beauty of this horse was captivating. I never really even noticed his ears he was so good. This is a really good book and you get to know this wonderful horse better.

The story of Gunner and his owner was very touching. The author added funny, tragic, and heartwarming incidents. I loved it. I just wished that more details were not written about. It was very short.

As a resident of the Mississippi Gulf Coast at the time of Hurricane Katrina and one who suffered the loss of our home, I was very interested in reading this story. I loved the horse, the family and the story. Though a sad and tragic ending, it was a good story full of redemption.

Great story for a pre-teen or early teenage. Would be good if reader were familiar with terminology dealing with horses and horse training facilities.

I got into a jag of reading real-life horse stories, and this book really scratched that itch. Gunner had a unique intelligence and personality that no other horse I'd read about exhibited. I especially loved that Gunner saved the owners son from a couple of dangerous situations, almost like Lassie. Fun read.

Review

"Anyone who has anything to do with university finances will learn something from Smith's book. It should be required study for anyone in administration, from a department chair to the president, and those who want to intelligently contribute to discussions that involve allocation of resources, strategic planning, research funding, or philanthropy. I plan to provide a copy of this book to everyone in my leadership team." (Lawrence Schovanec, President, Texas Tech University)"Finally, someone has written a logically laid out book that clearly and concisely articulates the inner workings of university research funding. This will benefit anyone involved in the extramurally funded research operation to include both faculty and administrators. I only wish this had been available 20 years ago!" Review

“A luminous rumination on storytelling and place, exile and return . . . extraordinary.”—San Francisco Chronicle   “[Teju] Cole is following in a long tradition of writerly walkers who, in the tradition of Baudelaire, make their way through urban spaces on foot and take their time doing so. Like Alfred Kazin, Joseph Mitchell, J. M. Coetzee, and W. G. Sebald (with whom he is often compared), Cole adds to the literature in his own zeitgeisty fashion.”—The Boston Globe“Crisp, affecting . . . Cole constructs a narrative of fragments, a series of episodes that he allows to resonate.”—The New York Times Book Review  “Hugely rewarding . . . [Every Day Is for the Thief] is both a celebration of one of the world’s most vibrant cities and a lament over what can be one of the most frustrating and difficult places to live. It is also a story of family breakup and an uneasy homecoming—the narrator has been away for fifteen years and must relearn how to navigate a place that was once home.”—NPR“[Every Day Is for the Thief has] a restraint that allows [Teju Cole] to slip in these exquisitely rendered observations on life, love, art that leave you feeling richer and more attuned to your own reality once you’ve finished reading.”—Dinaw Mengestu, The Atlantic“Shimmering . . . transcendent.”—The Seattle Times “Wonderful . . . a book that never fails to find a thoughtful and essential thing to say.”—Los Angeles Times “Fearless, nimble, and surprising.”—The Daily Beast“To read Cole is to be swept away by the language of a master wordsmith. In Every Day Is for the Thief, the PEN/Hemingway Award winner turns his considerable talents to the character of the expatriate, a young Nigerian medical student living in New York City who returns home to Lagos for a short visit. In his adventures wandering the town, reflections on the Nigerian homeland and the self-as-outsider arise. This work was originally published in Nigeria in 2007, four years before the release of Cole’s novel Open City, but was not available in the U.S. until now. We are thankful that non-Nigerian readers can now enjoy Cole’s first novel.”—The Root“A Teju Cole novel is a reading experience matched by few contemporary writers.”—Flavorwire“Every Day Is for the Thief, by turns funny, mournful, and acerbic, offers a portrait of Nigeria in which anger, perhaps the most natural response to the often lamentable state of affairs there, is somehow muted and deflected by the author’s deep engagement with the country: a profoundly disenchanted love. Teju Cole is among the most gifted writers of his generation.”—Salman Rushdie“[A] tightly focused but still marvelously capacious little novel . . . built with cool originality . . . The house of literature [Cole] is busy creating is an in-between space with fluid dimensions, resisting entrenchment.”—The Christian Science Monitor“Every Day Is for the Thief holds something for people with all levels of familiarity with Nigeria. It is an introduction and a provocation, a beautifully simple portrait and a nuanced examination. It invites you to steal a glimpse of Lagos.”—Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

A Nigerian narrator, living as a professional in New York for 15 years, returns home to (re)explore his home, perhaps in search of some part of himself or his past. In a series of mostly short chapters, he describes his interactions and experiences as he makes his way about Lagos, finding himself confronted by things he does not always expect despite the fact that this is his old home. Many reviewers think the narrator believes he has returned to a changed Nigeria, but actually it is probably the narrator that has changed the most. This book is labeled as “fiction”, but really reads more like a personal journal; one cannot help believing that the author is writing about himself.Teju Cole’s writing is compact and easy to read, but still manages to completely paint each scene vividly. Although the potential for violence is mentioned several times throughout the chapters, the presence of full-on malevolence is never really felt. The most prominent theme is the constant experience of petty corruption that throws shade on almost every one-on-one contact between strangers. The official salary that most livelihoods pay is far too little for most Nigerians to survive on, and they must “derive a living from their affairs” (as described in an old story of Imperial Russia). As the narrator says: “The problem used to only be the leadership. But now, when you step out into the city, your oppressor is likely to be your fellow citizen, his ethics eroded by years of suffering and life at the cusp of desperation.”The corruption starts in the very first chapter when the narrator visits the Nigerian consulate, a dingy place, to get the new Nigerian passport that will enable him to go home. The normal wait for a passport is four weeks, despite the official website insistence that normal turnaround time is only ONE week. This can be expedited by payment of an additional fee. Tellingly, the money order for “expediting” needs to be provided separately from the passport fee itself, and the receipt one receives includes only the passport fee. The expediting fee simply disappears into a pocket. Right in the office is a sign: “Help Us Fight Corruption.” It is not the last time he sees such a sign.Electrical service is spotty, especially after dark, and those who can afford generators for backup have them. For the rest, the house frequently goes dark early in the evening and can stay that way until the next day. The narrator speaks of sleep disturbed each night due to the constant assault by the noise of diesel generators running outside. He also makes a trip to an Internet café, and talks about observing with sideways glances that others are busy tapping out their own versions of the email scams Nigeria has become infamous for. These are illegal under Nigerian law, but that doesn’t observably slow the perpetrators down. Getting caught and being required to pay a fine is just a cost of doing business; like so many other parts of the typical Nigerian's life, unexpected surcharges abound.Based on what I’ve heard about Nigeria, I was not completely surprised by the general description of life in Lagos, but the writing is still quite interesting and added color and humanity to what was only my general conceptual impression. I found this an interesting and well-written book and a worthwhile read.

Teju Cole's latest work of fiction reads like the memoir of a writer living in New York City, who returns to Nigeria, the country of his birth for a visit. From the moment he arrives at the airport in Lagos, he revels in the sense of homecoming, but pretty soon, that sense of familiarity wars with a growing sense of feeling like a stranger. His family and friends help explain the changes that have taken place in the country since he left for America, not least the common corrupt practices that have become pervasive in everyday life, from the bribes required by government officials and the police, to gang members who need to be paid off at import warehouses so that drivers of vans carrying goods are able to leave without violence. He takes us to the myriad of internet cafes where, despite a legal notice on the walls warning patrons against fraudulent activity, many of the patrons still blatantly commit email fraud, in the hopes that they will be able to convince just one person that they have inherited millions of dollars and just need a 'small' processing fee in order to release the funds to them. While the writer is pleased to discover a privately funded institution that promotes and develops creative talent in Nigeria, he also despairs that because the students need to provide their own musical instruments which are very expensive, this institution is only really available to the wealthy. In addition, fees are on a different scale if the student is to be taught by a local teacher or one with foreign certifications. The book makes one ponder the complexity of social change and the depths to which humans are able to adapt in order to survive.

I loved this book on so many levels and the only thing that I think is odd and in some cases probably added to a few not so great reviews is that this is marketed as Fiction but this doesn't really feel at all like fiction. Having also read Cole's essays I find the tone very similar although I think I enjoyed this more than his essays as there is a personal level here and an intimacy that is not as clear in the essays.I greatly admire the subtle minimalist tone that Cole uses, yet the small chapters and short poetic sentences hold an emotional charge. Like when he is describing the estranged relationship with his mother or the violence of an angry mob! Also love the photography that is carefully interspersed throughout the book usually at the end of a chapter. Often I find books that do that distracting or at least underwhelming but works great here. I think the book is dispersed with many profound moments and the writing feels like we're gliding along slowly down calm dark waters. If nothing else this book has given me a small taste of life in Nigeria. Perhaps a bit tainted but nevertheless one man's authentic view. It's not impossible to go home again, but its often not easy.

Everything about "Elephant Country" is 5 star, the writing, the man, the elephants, all are 5 stars!Williams the main character in this book is very well developed, and is most remarkable. He islikable, honorable, brave and intelligent. This is the story of a man who spent his life in the jungles of Burma. He went there as a young man after distinguishing himself as a soldier in WW1.He was employed by the British Teak Company. Elephants are used to haul the Teak logs, and Williams was responsible for a large number of them. He went far beyond duty to understand and fairly treat these animals . They were his responsibility but he grew to love them. He is quoted as saying elephantsare my religion. The book tells the reader amazing facts about elephants. There is a wealth of information in this book . I have had an interest in elephants since reading the wonderful book "Modoc". I highly recommend this book.......and also Modoc .

After reading this unforgettable story, I recommended it to three other people who immediately bought it. One friend said she is reading it slowly so she can enjoy every word and being an animal lover, said it 'was the best book she had ever read' and she reads a LOT! At dinner last night, my host said that, after reading some of the book that I had loaned her, went out and bought a copy so she could read the ending in a copy of her own because she felt she needed to own it herself. She told me she sat and cried when she finished the story. She then promptly emailed her mother in Seattle and sister in Wisconsin to acquire a copy as soon as they could. This is a book that encompasses everything I enjoy in a book. It's real, it's exciting and educational, it's emotional, enlightening, extremely satisfying and poignant. What an appreciation I have gained for a great man and great animals. I cannot imagine anyone not being deeply touched by this account.

Born in 1897, during the declining years of the British colonial empire, J.H. “Elephant Bill” Williams was a veteran of both World Wars. After World War I, he went to Burma and made a career of overseeing the captive elephants which helped to move teak wood from the jungles of Burma to the markets of the world.Williams had an innate love for the Burmese elephants and they loved him back. Whereas the traditional training of elephants had tended to be unkind or even brutal, Elephant Bill revolutionized their care. He treated the animals with kindness and respect, and even started elephant training schools so they could gradually learn the skills they needed, instead of breaking their spirits to bring them into submission.Williams’ knowledge of elephants assumed dramatic importance during World War II when Burma was invaded by Japan. The Japanese would have captured the Burmese elephants to build roads and bridges for their advancing army. Williams, however, was able to employ his skills and experience to help the British Army and the Allies retain the valuable animals for their own military needs. The historic long trek of the elephants with fleeing British refugees, over incredibly difficult terrain into India, was breathtaking. Author Vicki Constantine Croke has done a remarkable job of finding original materials about J.H. Williams and his family, and especially about his work in WWII.I highly recommend “Elephant Company,” which I read in a Kindle version.

Billy Williams returned from the Great War and desired nothing more than adventure in the company of elephants. Traveling to Burma and signing on with a British teak lumber concern, he got his chance. This is such a charming story! I'm usually not a reader of "charming stories" and the military history aspect of the book initially triggered the purchase. Actually, there's very little military history and absolutely no combat in the book. Having said that, I am glad I bought it and it really is an excellent read.James Howard "Billy" Williams entered Burma at what would be the end of the colonial era in which Great Britain ruled large patches of the globe. In Burma, Williams becomes an employee of the Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation and is immediately in contact with elephants and the experience affects him greatly. For a man who loves animals, working with these intelligent giants is a fascination and a joy. Williams becomes a "wallah" - an elephant expert who can treat elephant injuries, direct their work and comes to understand their thinking together with his Burmese workers. It's a window into a long-gone world and how British lived in the colonies. The book chronicles his adventures with the elephants, his Burmese workers, falling in love and marrying, being involved in the Allied war effort in the CBI (China-Burma-India) theater. Although his elephants did good work building bridges and leading refugees to India, barely escaping the clutches of the brutal Japanese, "Elephant Bill's" elephants were not vital or even important. But, it adds to the story itself. This is a tale of the jungle, of a man's joy in the wilds and among animals who always had the best interests of his elephants at heart. He established "academies" for young elephants rather than allow the calves of working, female elephants die. He established hospitals for injured elephants and showed the company that they didn't need to use cruel methods of capturing wild elephants. As I said, this isn't my usual read. Having said that, I enjoyed it immensely and recommend it with five stars.

A fun way to learn how misfortunes have plagued humans for centuries. Having a bad day? You can read how another human probably had an even worse day on the same date. Do not expect this book to read like Mr. Farquhar's previous books. Each day stands alone and some histories are very brief while other histories approach the in-depth descriptions typical of Mr. Farquhar's other books. Rest assured, Mr.Farquhar's vibrant writing style will keep you entertained and wanting to read more.

I've read some of the author's previous books such as Royal Scandals and Great American Scandals, both of which I enjoyed very much. So I read Bad Days In History with some expectations. I'd put Bad Days in History in the same category as his other books. Interesting, well-researched, and written in a very readable and entertaining style. This book takes every day of the year and offers up mistakes, disasters, bad decisions, or otherwise bad things that happened on that day in history. The premise is interesting, and some of the days have more than one entry. From ancient history to more current, the entries cover a huge span of historical time, and as such are but thumbnail sketches. But that's one reason that makes this such a good book. Some of the entries have tweaked my curiosity enough to read further on the subject.Highly recommended for history lovers as well as the general non-fiction reader.

I enjoyed reading this book a lot, not because bad things happened to other people but because I didn’t know about 90% of those events, such as poor Harry Truman’s mother-in-law who hated him moving in with him and her daughter into the White House. A good example to what the author puts it in the introduction as, “No matter how lousy your day has been, somewhere in time, someone else's was so much worse."It is true that, in general, I find trivia entertaining, and since I like history, this book made my day stretching into a few days while I read it. I may even read it again, and I never read a book twice. The stories that stand out for me are quite a few, such as what happened to astronomer Tycho Brahe, The Great Emu War, when the sperm whale exploded in Oregon, Tom Shales going after Kathie Lee, Gifford, what the hotel-owner Steve Winn did to a priceless Picasso, the misprint in a 1632 Bible that says, “thou shalt commit adultery, The Birth of a Nation, D. W. Griffith’s 1915 film celebrating KKK, Japanese novelist Yukio Mishima’s ritual suicide going bad, what happened to Major Henry Rathbone and his fiancée, Clara Harris who were with Lincoln in the presidential box when he was assassinated many years after, and many other anecdotes all told with a clear, impartial language. The anecdotes in the book are in a specific order, from January to the end of December, however with no chronology as to the year but to the day; for example, what happened in the twentieth century followed by another event in the sixteenth century and vice versa if they were in two same or consecutive days of a certain month. This alone makes the pacing interesting and keeps the reader paying attention. The lesson gathered from all this is that bad luck, mayhem, and misfortune can happen any day and any time of any month, regardless of the year or century. Then, it is true that a good part of the book is somewhat dark and even graphic, but it is because the contents agree with the title, and no reader can fault that arrangement.

I am a big fan of Michael Farquhar's books. I actually think I've read them all. While this one is a little more heavy handed, with some serious subject matter, he still keeps the tone light, and there is an easiness about his writing that helps any history stay with the stories without getting bored.I like how the book is broken out into months, and then filtered further more into days. It makes for a quick snappy read.

Ok, not done with it yet. Why? Well I read it a day at a time as that is how it is laid out. Think you are having a bad day? Call up the date in this tome and it will reveal a really bad day at some point in history, many going back thousands of years. Interesting blend of history and humor and an enjoyable read. I don't feel I've jumped the gun since I've been on it for a few months now and a don't expect it to change in approach or content. Interesting and entertaining. Go look up your birthday and see what ugliness transpired in the year he decided to write up.

I have read several books by a Michael Farquhar and enjoyed them a great deal. This one is no exception. The daily dose of bad things happening makes a person realize that their day could have been a lot worse. The one thing I enjoyed most about this book was almost all of the events in the book were new to me. There were some I had heard of before, but these were few and far between. So if you like to get out of bed in the morning with a feeling of just how lucky you are not to have a day like the people in the pages had then this is the book for you.

The idea is a good one and there are some funny (tragic) days there. However, since there is a chapter for each day of the year and given that there are 365 days in a year, in order to keep the book to a manageable lenght, each chapter is inevitably very short. When a good story is told, then it is far too short. Most days unfortunately are not that intersting or funny and as a result the book quickly becomes tedious. Recommended for a commute but you may not finish it....

Didn’t know I had expectations for this book until I had it. The author does an all right job highlighting misfortunes of people or places during different parts of history for each day in the year, but the stories are pretty short. It’s still a good read for quick book reading trips, but don’t expect anything that’s going to give you in-depth accounts of history.
