About the Author
Jessica Gunderson grew up in the small town of Washburn, North Dakota. She has a bachelor’s degree from the University of North Dakota and an MFA in Creative Writing from Minnesota State University, Mankato. She has written more than fifty books for young readers. Her book Ropes of Revolution won the 2008 Moonbeam Award for best graphic novel. She currently lives in Madison, Wisconsin, with her husband and cat.

I used this as part of a unit on the Triangle Shirtwaist Fire and the Progressive Era. My students studied the fire first and then read the graphic novel (11th graders, so the actual reading part took us only 10 - 15 minutes). Each student then figured out a historical detail s/he thought was missing from the novel that was important, and created an additional graphic page as an extension of the story. I also tied it back to local history as we are an upstate NY school and there was another devastating factory fire after the Triangle fire locally. The text includes a page of vocabulary words and places to get more research. It is definitely for a middle school reading level - but my high school students really enjoyed this quick trip through history. The graphics are excellent and the text is very clear.
There is something incongruous about a "comic book" version of the famous tragedy. It's too lighthearted a format to effectively tell the tell of greed and insensitivity in the marketplace. So laws and regulations were put into place to protect woekers, who in this instance were young women and girls. They had to burn..
I am a teacher and my students absolutely love these books! I would give them 5 stars, but they are cheaply made and pages start falling out after only a small amount of use.
Good book exactly what needed use in classroom assignment
Graphic novels have become popular with older children and adults. When publishers target younger readers with graphic non-fiction, the meshing of fact with image results in a format that appeals to today's visually oriented young people. Although invented dialogue and conversation boxes are characteristic of this genre ("AAAAAGH!" "NO!" "RRRIIIPP!"), the book also contains direct quotations clearly identified in the text by yellow backgrounds.The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire presents the story of the tragic March 25, 1911 event through the lens of the labor activism that engulfed New York's garment industry at the time. Largely missing from this brief but accurate account is the specific Jewish connection to the labor strife. The actions of Clara Lemlich are appropriately depicted at the union rally which preceded the 1909 garment workers strike, but the author ignores the specifically Jewish nature of the labor activism and the oath taken by the strikers. Although this book is not written from a Jewish perspective, it can serve as a dramatic initial introduction to the event, particularly for reluctant readers. Ages 9-12. Reviewed by Norman H.
