About the Author
Pam MacKay teaches population and environmental biology, botany, microbiology, and tropical natural history courses at Victor Valley Community College in Victorville, California. She is involved in Mojave Desert conservation efforts, and has been instrumental in founding the new Mojave Desert Chapter of the California Native Plant Society where she currently serves as Field Trip Chair. She serves as a volunteer naturalist for the Golden Trout Natural History Association, leading hikes and natural history workshops in the backcountry of the southern high Sierra. Pam has a Master of Science degree in biology from Cal Poly Pomona and is also enrolled in a doctorate program in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California at Riverside. Her favorite past-times include hiking, backpacking, and photography.

I have the printed version and wanted to have the digital on my iPad. I was really looking at getting a version that I could use more places. What a total disappointment. The index has page numbers, but there are no page numbers in the body of the book. So you have to scroll through the sections to try and find the flower you are looking for. In addition, the digital images of the flowers are no where near the quality of the printed version.
I had traveled to Death Valley in mid March 2016 for the Super Bloom. I photographed every flower I cam across, and probably missed a few. Then was time to identify them. I saw this book on Amazon, and thought it the best of all the desert flower books offered, and downloaded it to my Kindle. I believe all but one of the flowers in Death Valley I was able to identify. The book is divided into sections according to colors, each flower is noted to its blooming season, habitat and range. The introduction tells about the Mojave Desert, topography, soils, past and present vegetation, past human use of the different tribes known to the area, early explorers, history. Even what makes the colors of the flowers. Oh, gosh, way too much to tell here. If you're ever going to take a trip to the desert, especially in the spring or fall when these flowers are blooming, you've got to take along this book. The photos are in color and top quality, in my opinion. I know what's on my itinerary for a future road trips back to the desert and I won't go without this book.
This is a great book for identifying desert wildflowers. It is one of the most complete books out there. The book is color coded to make flower identification easy. The one downside to this book is the photos are low rez. Some of the pictures are very clear but many need to be redone. As you get out into the field you will figure out that you need 2 books, photos you took your self and the Internet to correctly identify many of the flowers. There are a lot of flowers that look similar so you need to look at many different aspects of the plant to correctly identify it. The text is great with clear plant details, habitat, as well as bloom seasons. I found this book to be very helpful.
I bought this before a road trip to the Mojave Desert. It is arranged by colors of the blooms of the flowers. There is also a section on green and brown shrubs. I like the size for traveling but would have found it more useful if it had a spiral binding. The index is good and there is a chapter with good explanations of plant parts. I was able to use this book to learn more about desert plants and to identify some of the plants I came across.
This is not only a beautiful book, it's also the best that's yet available for identifying Mojave Desert vegetation and wildflowers. The plant descriptions and comments are exceptional and it provides alternative and often confusing local names for many species. If it had included additional photos showing the various plants when they're not in bloom, I'd have given it five stars.
This is great book! Very easy to follow and read as it is color coded. The information is decent enough for amateur botanist enthusiastic hikers out on the mojave
This is a very handy field guide. The photos are crisp, bright and modern and the descriptions are thorough. I like the size of the book, too. It is sturdy and compact, as a field guide should be.
My husband is a geologist so I spend tons of hours every year photographing flowers on our hikes in the desert. This is a fantastic book to help identify what I find... Highly recommend.
