I was about to give up on reading new (to me) authors on Amazon but decided to try one more and… BINGO! I found this great book. I loved it.Tudor England 1537. The country is in the middle of big religious and political changes. King Henry VIII is looking for the new ways of closing up monasteries and getting a hold of their treasures. It is during this turmoil when the main protagonist, a hunchback lawyer, Matthew Shardlake, is sent as a king’s representative to investigate a murder committed in the remote monastery. Exciting mystery plot follows.I got totally engrossed in this book. The author has a magic way with words. The description of marshes surrounding monastery or imported parrots and many, many others as well as all psychologically rich characters were superb. I could easily visualize all of them and they all stayed imprinted in my mind for a long time.The book is very atmospheric. Although set in a different time period and in a different country ( England 1537 versus Italy 1327) the general atmosphere is a little reminiscent of “The Name of the Rose” ( The Name of the Rose ). But it is a much lighter read.Those who liked Philippa Gregory series about Tudor England ( The Other Boleyn Girl (The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels Book 1) ) will find many familiar big historical figures (including Anne Boleyn and Cromwell) but they are present only in the background of the current story.I highly recommend this book to all fans of historical mysteries and especially to those who are hungry for the big chunks of real events and period details mixed with the plot. P.S. At the beginning it may be a little difficult to keep track of all the monks. They are all listed at the very first pages of the book which may help a little. But even without reading the list the important ones soon become easily recognizable, so just keep reading.

This is the first in a series of mysteries featuring Matthew Shardlake. It is the only one I have read and I plan to read at least one more. If it is as interesting and well-written as this one, I may become an addict! Matthew Shardlake is a hunchback, a condition that has engendered in him great anger and great compassion, resentment, self-reliance, sadness,and a touching vulnerability.Shardlake is also a headstrong Reformer who, at the beginning of the book, is starting to tire of the extreme actions taken by Thomas Cromwell, but remains committed to the cause. His internal journey as the novel progresses is at least as fascinating as the plot of the novel.Surrounding Shardlake is a host of other interesting characters - his ward, Mark, Alice, an assistant in the infirmary, and an array of monks at the monastery where a murder has taken place. The monastery, Scarnsea, is surrounded by fetid, dangerous marshes and surrounds an equally dangerous cesspool of corruption, sexual misconduct, ugly secrets, and a deep fear and resentment of the Reformation. Shardlake is mystified and takes the reader on a complicated journey to the surprising truth. Take the journey with him, you'll enjoy it!

As a fan of good ( and sometimes not so good... ) historical fiction for probably 55 years or so, this ranks up with the best I have read. The characters were rich and extremely well thought out, the scenarios well written and described and the history thoughtfully researched and presented in regard to the story line. I really recommend this book as highly as possible to anyone either interested in fiction set in sixteenth century England or just in search of an interesting mystery. My only complaint is nothing to do with the book, rather with the pricing . Over fourty dollars for an ebook series is way out of my budget and so I shall not be able to read the rest unless they are offered for free at some time.

Dissolution is a murder mystery set in a monastery at the time of the—you guessed it—Dissolution. The reluctant investigator, a hunchbacked minion of Thomas Cromwell, is sent to discover the fate of an earlier commissioner, and he is instructed to do it fast before the king catches wind of the whole tawdry episode. He’s not happy about his assignment, the monks are not happy to entertain him, his assistant is not happy about the ethics involved; it’s just not a happy book. Written in first person, Matthew Shardlake tells us he is in constant pain, which interferes with his powers of concentration; he develops a schoolboy crush on the only female servant at the monastery and of course she rejects him; he comes face-to-face with the truth of Cromwell’s manipulations but clings stubbornly to his Protestant faith. Naturally, everyone had a secret agenda and there were too many suspects. There were a few scenes where I felt that the author finally hit his stride, but for the most part I found the book plodded along. Discovering the murderer was almost an anticlimax for me and I was happy to get to the end. I will say the prose was easy to follow and I didn’t have any trouble finishing the story. It made for good bedtime reading.

I like this book as it clearly lays out the purpose of Adonai's Feasts listed in Leviticus 23. It shows why they were given and what was their purpose. The diagram of the feasts is the best I have seen. I recommend this book to anyone who has an honest desire to understand the Biblical Feasts. Though Chumney does include Jewish traditions, I am grateful that he calls it out. The problem with other books on this same subject is the reader is left to wonder if the what the writer is saying proceeds from the Bible or from the traditions of man. this book is different because in almost every case Chumney clearly delineates the source from which he is getting his material. This then leaves the reader in a strong position to discern whether he agrees or disagrees with the material presented. One can reference and check if the insights about the Passover truly come from the Bible. If so then you can agree and feel confident you are on Scriptural foundations. I recommend this book to anyone, Jew or Gentile, who wants to understand the Moeds (the Feasts) of the Lord...such as Passover. What was it? Why was it established by G-d? What is its purpose? is the Passover prophetic regarding the Messiah's life, death, burial and resurrection per Isaiah 53? Is it relevent for today for both Jew and Gentile? Those questions are answered.

Nearly twenty years ago, I stumbled upon a single copy of this amazing book in a local area Christian bookstore and was immediately drawn to it's intriguing title. I had never heard of the "Feasts of Messiah"! I continue to devour the riches of Biblical understanding as I read and re-read it repeatedly - underlining pertinent statements of Chumney's - all biblically based - and adding my own thoughts! So much so, in fact, I have had to purchase additional copies over the years of "wear and tear" (just as I did with this most recent purchase)! Chumney opened new doors of study for me that continue to strengthen and enrich my years of further study. As a pastor and teacher, I continue to pass on these understandings wherever I am appointed to serve, for Chumney's work opened truths of the whole Bible to me that I had never been taught before in my previous decades as a Christian.

This book was very informative. I wondered about the Jewish Festivals as a follower of the Messiah Yahshua. This book told me so much about the Festivals and being a follower of the Messiah we should follow the Festivals. You will find out roughly when the Messiah was born and during what Festival and alot more. Ihave been a photographer for over half a century. I have worked in a wide variety of photo positions, from U2 and RF4C to labs etc. Ms. McKinnell has pointed out several things that will make my current love, Birds, and how to make a shoot more productive. Exactly what I was looking for.

I read the reviews prior to my purchase and it was exactly my experience. She writes in a way my 7yr old grandson could understand, which is important when beginning to develop your skills in photography. I felt like she was sharing secrets over a cup of coffee. I never considered planning prior to going out to shoot but it made so much sense. A must read for new photographers !

Some of the tips in this book might strike the experienced photographer as "intuitively obvious to the casual observer". Nonetheless, it doesn't hurt to review the basics from time to time, and this book did that at a reasonable price.

I'm a big believer in planning to the smallest detail: I plan everything when I embark on a photo trip. Perhaps that is why I did not find this book to be very useful as I already was familiar with everything the author talked about. I ended up returning it. It didn't help that the images were ho-hum, and if I may say so, I usually do better.Note that this book is not about photography. It is all about planning and preparing for a photo trip and something about image backup.Consider purchasing this book only if you are not a planner as it will give you good, practical tips. The price is very reasonable (it does not cost more than a cup of coffee). However, if you are already more than a snapshooter, there is probably little value in buying this book.

I enjoy photography and travel so it was nice to see the subject addressed really well. The author uses basic but well worth repeated guidelines for planning a successful travel and photography exercise. A lot of folks want nothing more then a few mementos of their vacation with the family trip while others seek a solo journey into a new and unknown setting. This e-book has something for every one while being an easy good read. Having traveled quite a bit myself, I still gained some valuable reminders from Ms. Anne McKinnell's writings. If you are planning any sort of journey that includes minimal or expanded photographic endeavors it will be well worth your time to take a look at "Before The Shutter: Planning Your Next Travel..."

Although I have been an amateur photographer for years, her ideas for preparation and research will no doubt improve my photography quite a bit. I would love to read more of her photography instruction.

This little book is a really great buy for both the beginner and the enthusiast! I have been in photography for over 60 years and found many things contained that help, particularly with the newer digital cameras! So thanks, Anne and thank you Amazon for making it available!

I'm not saying this is a bad book, it's just not for me. It's really all about her routine, and or planning. Nothing really gave me any inspiration or ideas when I finished. But it's just my view, so read on.

Jeff Kosseff is Assistant Professor in the US Naval Academy's Cyber Science department, where he teaches cybersecurity law. He has practiced technology and First Amendment law, and clerked for Judges Milan D. Smith, Jr. of the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, and Leonie M. Brinkema of the US District Court for the Eastern District Court of Virginia.
