I was very pleased to come across this gem of a book; it is an absolute treasure trove of information.I have a strong interest in the whole subject of Rastafarianism and am always keen to explore books on the subject.The book comprises the following broad chapters:-Part 1: An assessment of Rastafari in the New MilleniumPart 2: The Globalisation of RastafariPart 3: Rastafari Ideology, Philosophy and PraxisPart 4: Gender Considerations in the Rastafari MovementPart 5: Religious Considerations in the Rastafari MovementPart 6: Rastafari and ReggaePart 7: Political Dimensions of the Rastafari MovementA number of detailed essays reflect each particular section. The brilliance of this book is that it has 18 expert contributors . Each contributor has written at least one in-depth and thoroughly researched essay.I like the fact that a fair amount of personal research has been carried out by the contributors - whether by personal interview or time spent within rastafari communities. I must say I have gleaned a lot of information from this book that to date I have not found elsewhere.For example, The Globalisation of Rastafari chapter comprises of 4 detailed essays: The Rastafari prescence in Ethiopia; Water development projects and Cultural Citizenship; Rastafari in New Zealand; Rastafari Fundamentalism in Salvador, Brazil.Very informative. This opened my eyes to how rasta communities have fared across the various continents, as well as how they are perceived by local populations and the various dynamics involved.The chapter on Gender Considerations in the Rastafari Movement comprises 3 compelling essays: The Woman in Rastafari; Reasonings on Gender Relations in Rastafari; Cultural Ideology and Rastafari Women.Again, very informative and thorough. I like how the book encapsulates rastafari from a multitude of perspectives -cultural, ideological, religious, political etc - from the early days right through to contemporary times.I imagine this book would be an invaluable guide to anyone involved in the study of Rastafarianism.I highly recommed this book if you have an interest in the subject of Rastafarianism, or if you have an academic involvement. Essential!!
